Re: Cones in Art & Literature

I've just realised that 'cone' is a mutant form of 'once'.

"Once upon a time" starts a lot of stories.

Re: Cones in Art & Literature

I've been waiting for someone to mention that Madonna and Annie Lennox have both worn "cone bras." Am I the only pervert who remembers this? I'm deeply disappointed that no one else has mentioned this, because now I've had to fight a losing battle with my own compulsion to mention it. How embarrassing.

Re: Cones in Art & Literature

It is most appropriate that my offering follows on the heels (and bras) of Madonna and Annie Lennox. The phrase "dog-doo sno-cone" is used in the song "Nanook Rubs It" by Frank Zappa.

Re: Cones in Art & Literature

"Hastening on between rows of these mechanisms, he heard the roar of pursuit and saw the red flare of moving lights behind him in the gloom. He fled on through an eternity of cyclopean metal cones and cylinders, of black retorts and flameless furnaces, and reached another exit. This led into what was plainly a natural cavern, with rough nodular walls in which he caught the glittering of pale, mercurial ores."
Clark Ashton Smith - "The Amazing Planet"

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

next cone...this time it's a cone- shaped tesla coil

(Dictated while taking a stroll) I have come to realizewhat a superbly contrived marionette man is. Though without strings attached, one can strut, jump, hop and, moreover, utter words, an elaborately made puppet! Who knows? At the Bon season next year, I may be a new dead invited to the Bon festival. What an evanescent world! This truth keeps slipping off our minds.

Cone bras, and the pointy conical miracles they conceal, were in fact the first cones that came to my girl-addled brain--yet good taste (or timidity) prevented me from mentioning them. When I was eleven years old I saw Eurythmics live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Annie came out wearing her cone-bra, and the experience left quite an impression on my impressionable young mind. One might even say: I have cones on the brain!;)
