Re: Neglected/Underrated Writers
Many readers will not read an 'old' book unless its labeled a Classic by the Literary Establishment. They prefer a contemporary work even if its a mindless best seller or a mediocre thriller. To try and create interest in a neglected writer is a task worthy of Sisyphus. But I'm all for it.
Yes, Simon P. Murphy wrote some enjoyable fiction. Some of it is available on TLO.

Jayaprakash Satyamurthy.
I'm not sure if he's "neglected" or "underrated," but he's not been read or discussed widely enough. His story "THE OUROBOROS APOCRYPHA" is a near masterpiece.
"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”

Re: Neglected/Underrated Writers
Hello there. This is my first post having just joined the forum this evening and become acquainted with Thomas Ligotti's work in the last few months. Have got very into him very quickly. Enough so that I had to buy Teatro Grottesco for my pal Steve as soon as I'd finished reading it. That book made a big impression on me. It took me into some pretty unsafe but compulsive areas.
Anyway, I'm getting some great tips from this forum, so thanks! If I can throw in my tuppence-worth, I'd recommend, 'The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner' a novel by James Hogg published in 1824. I'm not sure if this is either neglected or underrated (existing in the classic European canon as it does) but I certainly don't hear it spoken about very often. If you've not read it, it's well worth considering...

Welcome.
I don't know how big it is but when I was cleaning a highschool a few years ago I was listening to a student going over his essay about the book with a teacher.

Re: Neglected/Underrated Writers
Thanks for the welcome Robert. I've not read it for 25 years, but my memory of it is as a novel that explores paranoia, mental illness, confusion and faith in a compulsive, unsettling and smart manner. I should really re-read it to see what I think now!

One of the few times I think the movie improved on the book...although I also liked Nevermore.
