Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
Gotta second Mouth of Madness. The only true Lovecraftian movie I ever got to see in the theater.

Did anyone see Giger's Necronomicon? It is a documentary directed by H.R. Giger in 1975 and it centers on his work, but where he also expresses an antinatalist ideology.
Also, there is Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown (2008) for the uninitiated. Here is Giger's Necronomicon: And Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown:
Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
As I said in other posts, Gaiman's opinion on Lovecraft is way off in that documentary.
I also hope Del Toro gets to direct At the Mountains of Madness; I enjoyed The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth and both Hellboy movies by him. Crimson Peaks is one of the movies I want to see next year.

Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
I am curious if those who've watched "In The Mouth of Madness" (which really is a very cool, creepy movie) have also read "The Land of Laughs," a novel by Jonathan Carroll.
There are some striking similarities in plot. I read the book many years ago, but I recall it being quite excellent. A nice, slowly building weird novel.

Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
I watched The Eldritch Influence recently and he seemed vaguely self-effacing about his contribution to the mythology. I don't view it as much different from Bride Of Frankenstein (admittedly a much better film than any of the Gordon ones I've seen). Lair Of The White Worm (I love this film) and The Raven too. They are just comedy versions. Since a lot of these are quite old they're probably easier to accept. If someone today did a similar comedy based on my favourite weird fiction, I might be pretty annoyed. The Raven might be seen as particularly disrespectful but it has fun moments. In The Mouth Of Madness has some pretty goofy comedy too, which I don't think worked very well but it has some really striking scenes that help make up for that.

Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
I have not seen any direct Lovecraft adaptations I have liked except for Re-Animator (very funny, actually, which I think Lovecraft clearly intended).
If you are referring to Lovecraft inspired movies, there are several, Alien chief among them.

Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
Yeah, I meant direct adaptations; the good ones are really few, but thanks to this thread I finally watched Die Farbe. It seems the best Lovecraftian movies are not based on any of his work but on his aesthetic.

Re: What are your favorite H.P. Lovecraft adaptations?
Miguel1984, I posted a link at TLO to a film called The Maze a while back. It was available on Youtube in its entirety and probably still is. Directed by William Cameron Menzies, it captures perfectly the atmosphere of Derleth's The Shuttered Room. A touch of M. R. James mixed with Shadow over Innsmouth also describes it very well. It's quite a decent film, though like Night of the Demon errs badly by showing the Horror at the end.
The film was based on a story by a writer known for Surrealist Horror but I wasn't familiar with his work and damned if I can recall his name now. I do recall that Salvadore Dali illustrated the original edition of the book the film is based on.
