"Till human voices wake us, and we drown." — T.S. Eliot

In her first collection, award-winning author Helen Grant plumbs the depths of the uncanny: Ten fathoms down, where the light filtering through the salt water turns everything grey-green, something awaits unwary divers. A self-aggrandising art critic travelling in rural Slovakia finds love with a beauty half his age — and pays the price. In a small German town, a nocturnal visitor preys upon children; there is a way to keep it off — but the ritual must be perfect. A rock climber dares to scale a local crag with a diabolical reputation, and makes a shocking discovery at the top. In each of these seven tales unpleasantries and grotesqueries abound — and Grant reminds us with each one that there can be fates even worse than death.

Contents
Grauer Hans
The Sea Change
The Game of Bear
Self Catering
Nathair Dhubh
Alberic de Mauléon
The Calvary at Banská Bystrica
Story Notes
Acknowledgments

Helen Grant was born in London but has lived in Spain, Germany and Belgium. Her first novel, The Vanishing of Katharina Linden, won an ALA Alex Award in the US and was shortlisted for both the CILIP Carnegie Medal and the Booktrust Teenage Prize. Since then she has produced two other novels, The Glass Demon and Wish Me Dead, and is currently working on a trilogy set in Flanders. The first book, Silent Saturday, will be published by Bodley Head in 2013. Helen now lives in Scotland with her husband, two children and two cats. You can find out more about Helen Grant on her website.

I've read the opening and closing stories of the collection when they appeared in anthologies; if the other five are even half as good, this will be a first-rate volume.

Re: The Swan River Press

Hi all,

just a few hours ago I was lamenting to myself that Helen Grants work has not been collected up and as if by magic...

Though she has a few (well recieved) novels published, her adult supernatural material has been been largely missed as it all appeared in the small press as far as I am aware. I am sure that this book will put her very much on the 'weird fiction' map.

You can read a story by her in the (excellent) Sarob Press Ghosts and Scholars volume.

REGARDS!

J.

Re: The Swan River Press

I myself had been reading about Grant's novel The Glass Demon and thinking of checking it out from the library, and then I refreshed Twitter and found her collection announced. It was almost spooky. Certainly I took it as a sign and borrowed The Glass Demon.

Re: The Swan River Press

A copy of Mark Valentine’s Selected Stories has landed here in the cold, dreary North. As it has been no more than a year and a half since I first made the acquaintance with the exquisite writing of Mr Valentine most of the stories in this very elegant volume is unfamiliar to me. New adventures awaits ...

Re: The Swan River Press

My copy of 'Selected Stories' arrived the other day and, as I've come to expect from SRP, it's a beautifully designed book.

I thought people might be interested to see a list of the collections in which the various tales originally appeared:

Carden in Capea - Strange Tales II, Tartarus, 2007
The Autumn Keeper - Cinnabar's Gnosis, Ex Occidente, 2009
The Bookshop in Novy Svet - The Nightfarers, Ex Occidente, 2009
The Dawn at Tzern -
The Nightfarers, Ex Occidente, 2009
A Walled Garden on the Bosphorus -
The Mascarons of The Late Empire & Other Studies, Ex Occidente, 2010
The Mascarons of the Late Empire -
The Mascarons of The Late Empire & Other Studies, Ex Occidente, 2010
The Unrest at Aachen - Delicate Toxins, Side Real, 2011
The Amber Cigarette - The Peacock Escritoire, Ex Occidente, 2011
The Ka of Astrakhan -
The Peacock Escritoire, Ex Occidente, 2011
A Certain Power -
The Peacock Escritoire, Ex Occidente, 2011
The Original Light - This Hermetic Legislaure, Ex Occidente, 2012

A quick back-of-a-fag-packet calculation shows that if you were to try and get hold of these
collections today (many of them out of print) you wouldn't get much change out of 500 quid!

So if you haven't yet discovered the wonderful work of Mr Valentine this new selection is the opportunity to open your eyes to one of the finest authors of the esoteric and supernatural writing today.

falls upon us one summer’s day like snow, all we wish for is to be forgotten." - WG Sebald

Re: The Swan River Press

Just wanted to second what Derek said. Brian at Swan River is doing a real service by providing an elegant, well produced and affordable collection of Mark Valentine's recent work. I snapped this up, even though there's only a couple of stories that I don't already own here!

Brian at Swan River is taking a well-deserved break, so I'll post here a new review of Selected Stories (and of Robert Aickman's Intrusions) at The Pan Review:

Thanks for posting those, Mark! :-)

Still copies of Selected Stories available, too!

. . . . and now I'm waiting on the delivery of Helen Grant's The Sea Change. Here's a recent interview with her by Jason Rolfe:
