Best Reggie Oliver stories?

I'm in the mood for a 'best of' Reggie Oliver reread, but I neglected my usual habit of noting down the stories in each book I thought stood out, probably because I find him a consistently enjoyable author, and so far only have listed Flowers of the Sea, Death Mask and The Boy in Green Velvet from various other pointless lists I have made.

Which others should I do? I have all his collections bar Madder Mysteries.

Re: Best Reggie Oliver stories?

I have unfortunately only read two of his collections so far, but I love Reggie Oliver’s stories, there's a perfect blend of traditional ghostly tales and the more modern weird to be found in his work. Some stories I would add to a favorite list would be:
The Children of Monte Rosa (This might be my favorite Oliver story)
The Man in the Grey Bedroom
Holiday from Hell
The Rooms are High
Love at Second Sight
The Druid’s Rest
I have yet to read a story of his that I didn’t like, and his tales are usually very memorable. My wife is reading Masques of Satan now to warm up to the Dublin Ghost Story festival, and she absolutely adores his tales so far.

Re: Best Reggie Oliver stories?

For a slightly askew Oliver you may want to try "Love and Death". It was easily one of the strongest entries in the very solid Scarlet Soul anthology. Wonderfully aphoristic.

Not only my choice of Reggie’s best story, but possibly the best horror story of all time.
Flowers of the Sea.

Re: Best Reggie Oliver stories?

'The Devil's Funeral' is my personal favorite, although to be fair, Oliver has written a great many superb stories.

"When a man is born. . .there are nets flung at (his being) to hold it back from flight. You talk to me of nationality, language, religion. I shall try to fly by those nets." - James Joyce

I agree on all accounts regarding the man and his body of work.
I haven't read everything of his yet but I would add:
The Posthumous Messiah
The Mortlake Manuscript
The Blue Room
The Spooks of Shellborough
Come Into My Parlour

Mr. Pigsny (Has a Thomas Owen grotesquerie and a knee-slapping sense of humor. Menacing from word one).

I particularly remember loving The Children of Monte Rosa, but most of these titles are giving me fond feelings of recognition.

Re: Best Reggie Oliver stories?

What collection should a newcomer to Oliver's work start with?

'A man must dream a long time in order to act with grandeur, and dreaming is nursed in darkness.' - Jean Genet
