Re: Bookstores Carrying Weird Fiction?

"This also reminded me that the http://www.mysteriousbookshop.com/ still exists. They published two collections of Robert Bloch's crime fiction."

Thanks, Waffles! I'm often in NYC but had never heard of it, now must visit!

Barnes Noble is dying. Waterstones in the U.K. is thriving.

My last visit was around 2015, although I'm planning to visit again. I'm not the best judge of the scope of their stock because I now pretty much ignore genre fiction, but I didn't see any modern Weird Fiction I recognized (no Ligotti, Barron, Mieville etc.) and the staff on hand didn't know about Ligotti. They did, however, carry a lot of "mainstream" horror and dark fantasy from major publishers and some graphic novels in the same genres, both new and out of print. I picked up some Tanith Lee books and a coffee table book about Krampus. So far as size, it's a small store - I'd estimate they had about 4-5000 books - there was one row of floor shelves and two walls with books, including a recessed enclave. They also carried a lot of horror kitsch and movie memorabilia, dvds/vhs, and ,strangely, a stock of herbs and powders although I don't recall any occult books.

Could be disquieting to some, or easier for those who dislike human interaction.
I must confess I buy ALL my books online.
My burg, which is decent sized, has no bookstores.
When I visit San Francisco, friends always take me to City Lights, but I will not spend any money at that shop.

Re: Bookstores Carrying Weird Fiction?

We have three bookstores in our town, two chain stores, and one comic book store, you can find Lovecraft, Poe and even some cheap versions of Chambers’ The King in Yellow in the mainstream shops, but that’s about it. One of them has a decent selection of “cult” books. The Comic book store frequently orders in tons of Lovecraft (of course) and some Ligotti, Barron, Kiernan, and some Chaosium volumes like Machen and Dunsany. But like many of you, I order most of my books online as well.

Last summer I visited my sister in Colorado Springs and they had some excellent bookstores there for those of you who live in that direction, Hooked on Books was a clear standout that sold a lot of the old Arkham House first editions, along with Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and others, even found some Hippocampus releases there. They also sold some nifty “I Read Banned Books” shirts.
