Preferred Mode of Oblivion

It's quite evident that a number of us unwind in various ways. Whether due to stress, outright addiction, or just plain repetitive stupidity is neither here nor there... What is your preferred mode of oblivion? I like to think my life is eased by copious amounts of Labatt Blue beer.

Buying the First Round,

Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

music...stupidly large amounts of music...be it death metal or neo folk (depends on the mood)

I also meditate

and I have knives...I find things to do with them (not to myself)

Hypnosis via heavy amounts of music. Contrary to popular belief, Coca Cola and peppermints are somewhat addictive... Don't ask.
I've only once ever been sedated in my life, excluding dental work or surgery. God it was weird.

Acid use to be my drug of choice. Many strange nights watching walls breathe and the bushes outside shake like demons. Anymore I'll settle for hard liquer and a horror movie.

Re: Preferred Mode of Oblivion

Walking and talking. I walk as fast as I talk. Also, I light candles and meditate while looking at the flame (if I'm alone, of course).

Reading, internet, music, and movies. I like movies again thanks to dvds.

Drinking tea. Stretching.

(I really should be working out to lose my belly.)

Excellent thread, C.S.

My story NOWHERE TO GO was published by PS PUBLISHING in a book titled POSTSCRIPTS #14 in England in 2008. Let me know if you've read it. I self-published eight short stories on audio-cassette in 1999 titled, fittingly, BARRY WOOD'S SHORT STORIES. And a few other short stories in little obscure publications -- which I forget their titles.

The guitar classes I take keep me nice and distracted. Otherwise, beer, smokes, and the company of my minions keeps me nice and oblivious.

Buddies, thralls, cronies, servitors, co-conspiritors, worshippers, or corporate underlings ? Hopefully the first.

Re: Preferred Mode of Oblivion

Interesting thread. Like everyone, I distract myself in a variety of ways, but the ol' chronic has been my traditional weapon of choice in fighting the onslaughts of reality....

Re: Preferred Mode of Oblivion

Fisrt I thought this topic would be about suicide.

I'm not an addictive personality, though I do seem to always be reaching for something -- Valium, Provigil (alertness aid), Soma, and Klonopin is for sleep. OTCs... The Chronic, yeah... And a whiskey, wine, or beer. I do it all. Now trying antideps.

I'm always listening to music of all kinds. I used to say it was the highest art. It's involving, so much more so than TV or movies. Everyone's into movies, movies, movies... Watching (or reading) a play is more involving. Everyone's into novels, novels, novels... Music is a good balance, and it involves me for the best rewards.

As far as escape, sometimes that's actually no fun. Gets more depressing. Though it sometimes "descends" on me, I no longer formally meditate; gave it up a few years back to concentrate on women. Now I've been there, done that. There doesn't have to be much worth "living for" -- people often make a grand thing out of that -- just the daily pleasures. But for that you still need a job, and I can't see myself going on in that much longer.

P.S. I should say, for real get-through oblivion per se, there's nothing beats an evening cigarette and drink, then pizza and a UFO/crop circle, bigfoot-type program on the History Channel. Then I can vegetate. Also lately have been able to take naps on couch while music plays...lullabye.

Re: Preferred Mode of Oblivion

For the last 8 months or so, I have the company of a cousin who I call or meet practically everyday.Oddly enough, since december, she started to cause most of the problems I used to ease with her good company. Now we are slowly getting distant and...I have yet to find another way of disconnection.Books, music and movies are no longer as effective as they used to be.

If you're a wizard, why do you wear glasses?
