Brendan, I extend my profoundest sympathies.

Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

Re: The Agony Column

Nine years ago I experienced a detached retina in one eye and holes in the other. Both were operated on simultaneously and my sight was saved, though one eyeglass sports a ten diopter lens. The surgery on the detached retina installed a Scleral Buckle. If you are the slightest bit squeamish, skip the video below.

Lately I have been having vision problems in this eye which filled me with dread that the buckle was failing and the fall of the final curtain was at hand. The good news is that the buckle appears to be intact, but the pupil is likely a star student exhibiting Adie's Tonic Pupil. It has been slowly freezing towards a paralytic state, possibly initiated by the trauma of the initial surgery. This is creating a problem in coordinating with the other eye, as the amount of light captured can vary considerably between the two. Unfortunately, my work entails staring at computers, blueprints and printed text.

I hesitated to post this in the Agony Column, as I am oddly calm in this situation. I suppose this is due in part that my worst fear was not realized, being the loss of the retina and total vision in the eye. I can see, but the vision is disjointed as if one side of my mind is fading into oblivion. Maybe it will eventually provide me with the motive to move away from my career path, which is drowning my soul, and this might not be such a bad thing after all. An eye for a life?

Re: The Agony Column

This morning I was informed that my position at work has been terminated I am now happily unemployed. Over the last year or so the religious nonprofit organization I worked for became more secular (and less benevolent) with the addition of a Human Resources person. My job has been deemed unnecessary as the office I work for is due for "structural changes" in the near future. At least I now have more time for beer and Quirk Classics! , , , and !

P.S. I worked there over 28 years!

Re: The Agony Column

I'm sorry to hear this too. It infuriates me when I come across stories like this! Just another reason to want to hide away from this world forever.

I hope you enjoy your free time, and find another job when it becomes necessary for you to do so.
