Re: Twin Peaks - The Missing Pieces

Twin Peaks was a great show. It was wildly visionary for its time and I only wish it hadn’t been so abruptly cancelled, forcing the writers to to throw together an ending I considered slapdash, its main approach to tying up loose ends being to kill off major characters in a fashion I found almost comical. Yes, self-indulgence marred the second season but not fatally; the show was still the best thing on television by far. Kyle Maclachlan always blamed Lynch for losing interest at that time and letting the show slide and he was certainly in a position to know. The show was fantastic, the end was a cheat. I would have loved a third season.

At some point, I'll check out The Entire Mystery.

Re: Twin Peaks - The Missing Pieces

After the revelation of the killer, the second season became wildly uneven. I'd heard that Lynch knew the show was being cancelled so the finale was all cliffhangers. I enjoyed it while it lasted.

I heard that Mulholland Drive was supposed to be another ABC series. Thankfully, it v=became my favorite Lynch film instead.

If I had a Blue-Ray player I would get the new Twin Peaks set.

Re: Twin Peaks - The Missing Pieces

I’ve always found Lynch problematical. Blue Velvet was brilliant but theLost Highway seemed like a collection of amazing cinematic vignettes mounted in one Indigestible Whole. Fire Walk With Me, I felt, was a mistake. Only Lynch would decide a show like Peaks needed a prequel and not a real ending!
The guy can be absolutely brilliant but what I consider to be his self-indulgence drives me up the wall at times.
Still I wish he would continue making films, flawed or not.
I'll have to check out Mulholland Drive. I've seen bits of it that look quite promising. Thanks, Waffles!

Re: Twin Peaks - The Missing Pieces

As mentioned before, I'm a profound admirer of David Lynch; I love his work with the intense, persistent passion that is the hallmark of those discoveries one makes in adolescence, and it is no exaggeration to say that he has been the prime creative influence in my life who isn't a writer. Personally, I love his films the more ambiguous and seemingly impenetrable they are - my top favorites are Eraserhead, Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway/Mulholland Drive, and Blue Velvet. (I do confess I am still not sure what to make of Inland Empire, however!) Also, when it comes to Twin Peaks, I must admit to being a lifelong fanboy; spending 7th grade repeatedly checking out the first season tape by tape from the local library, and inadvertently traumatizing my little brother, who witnessed the first appearance of BOB in a feverish haze when home sick one day. The final episode of Twin Peaks is actually one of my favorites of the show, due in large part to the prolonged and audaciously unconventional sequences concerned with the Black Lodge and its inhabitants; I always felt the over-the-top cliffhangers for the other plotlines were deliberate and worked well - one last ditch attempt to draw in enough interest to save the show, or Lynch intentionally self-destructing his creation as a bitter joke. (I don't doubt that in the event of a third season the characters would be revealed to have escaped their various fates or returned to normal, as with Ben Horne, whose head injury probably would have returned to his horrible old self.) Back in my middle school days I was so obsessed with TP and its mysteries I printed the original shooting script of FWWM in its entirety off the internet, and from what I recall the show's regulars were seen surviving the various explosions and catastrophes of the finale. So, I have been quite excited by the new dvds, even though I lack a blu-ray player; I really want to see the bonus disc of cut footage from the movie, as the preview indicates that every script scene that was cut from the film is there - including plenty of glorious Black Lodge otherworldliness!
