Re: The X- Files

According to some reviews I read, the third episode is great and really feels like an old school monster of the week episode. It is called Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: The X- Files

I'd disappointed if it felt like an old school traditional monster of the week episode considering it's by Darin Morgan, who set out to break all rules of the show with his scripts. By far the best writer The X-Files had, and his Millennium scripts were great too. The guy didn't write much, but what he did write had a huge influence on genre television.

All those post-X-Files culty shows tried to do 'a Darin Morgan episode' after that, and rarely stuck the landing. Underneath the surface wackiness lay serious dramatic substance and thematic depth.

Re: The X- Files

I thought the first episode was crap, and the second episode was alright. I am now thrilled to say I loved the third episode. Most I've enjoyed an X-Files episode since at latest Season 6 and potentially earlier. Witty, legitimately amusing and a nice cynical undercurrent of substance beneath it all. Darin Morgan can ####ing write.

I found Duchovny really wooden and unengaging in the opener, but he was great in this. This episode is receiving harsh treatment online from many, so I'm curious if other TLOers enjoyed it as much as I did.

Well, Rhys Darby is wonderful, and I enjoy Tyler Labine as well.
It was totally a Monster of the Week episode, and fun. If Duchovny seemed wooden early on, I assume it had something to do with the reticence of his character.

I thought the fourth episode was pretty decent, so this run has recovered from a terrible opener and become a solid season. The last two episodes are written by Chris Carter though, so I'm unsure if they will keep up the standard.

I found it pretty watchable and entertaining (maybe the accent helped) - not among the greats like say

Synchrony (The X-Files) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

one of my faves (and always makes me think of Gentle's ASH - "you wouldn't like the reality wars little one")

but there was certainly a gratifying cynicism - "but I had a speech prepared"

Re: The X- Files

I have seen only the first episode, My struggle, and to be honest I did not enjoy it. And God, was I an X-Files nerd back in the day? I even had my Agent Scully wall poster and dreamt about her every night. She was my first nerd crush and I must say, she looks even better these days with a few years up her sleeve.

I felt the episode to be really rushed. There was so much information in there, crammed into 45 minutes or so. Mulder just ditches YEARS of belief because some girl tells him so? I'm positive the scriptwriters, the producers and Christ Carter himself could have extended all of that into the remaining five episodes and create a nice six episodes miniseries in the process.

I thought that was how it was going to be, the way most modern TV series have evolved. I'm still not very sold on the back to Monster of the Week format.

Anyway, I've been told it gets better. I'll see if I can catch some of it latter this month.

Anyway, people die...
