Re: Der Orchideengarten ( Garden of Orchids)

Thanks Yellowish Haze,
Actually the entire series is in Hathi Digital Trust and I am able to copy and paste one page at a time. the Scans are pretty good, good enough to use. It has the bound into a book editions and all the material is there.

That can save me a pile of money and I use Hathi Digital trust quite a bit to pick up old titles. My real problem is finding the time to work on anything.

For those interested my translation of the first issue is almost complete and you can find it here:
http://derochideengarten.wordpress.com/

I don't know when I will be able to get back to it.

Re: Der Orchideengarten ( Garden of Orchids)

I hope no one minds me performing dark and unhallowed rites to resurrect this thread after so long, but I do in fact experience with Strobl, actually quite a lot more than most people these days I would say XD

I've read both volumes of his "Eleagabal Kuperus", the collections "Die Knöcherne Hand und Anderes" and "Beelzebubs Meerschaumkopf" and his novels "Umsturz im Jenseits", "Gespenster im Sumpf" and "Der Zauberkäfer". I still have a lot of his works at my disposal to read but since his work often comes in the form of fraktur, it's not something I delve into every day. Because the several pairs of near identical letters in almost every fraktur font used by publishers really messes with my speed reader tendencies ^^;

I would basically advise any of these. Knöcherne Hand is a collection of quite good, varied horror material, while Gespenster im Sump is so out there I am shocked no one's translated it yet: set in a future several years after the end of World War I, Vienna has become isolated from the world, due to a mysterious insanity breeding illness rampant there. Over time the burned out ruins of Vienna have become host to giant spiders and giant rats, mysterious theological societies, gangs of roving barbarians who eat dirt among other things.

It's a bizarre story that thankfuly anyone who can read German can access quite readily thanks to ngiyaw books who offer free German public domain horror books and stories form various authors, and the best part is their transcriptions are both accurrate and are written in normal latin script as opposed to fraktur ! Biographie und verfgbare Werke von Karl Hans Strobl

Dear all, a worthwhile resurrection! Joe Bandel did issue a collection of tales 'Lemuria' via Lulu and I highly recommend it. Some of it is quite straightforward 'horror' and other material very odd indeed. Here is a link to it Lemuria Book 1 by Joe Bandel (Paperback) — Lulu GB The cover is a copy of the German original but the artist probably didn't know what Lemuria (the lost continent) was but did know what a lemur was and took that as the starting point. I with there was more Strobl, 'Gespenster im Sump' sounds great! J

Also anyone who speaks German, there is a full online edition of the original Lemuria, but again, it's in fraktur >>

I had actually done a review on every Strobl book I've ever seen, I could send you the links if interested, as I don't wanna come in and immediately just advertise myself the first post I make ^^;

Re: Der Orchideengarten ( Garden of Orchids)

Hi everyone! Time to update this thread as I've just published the first fourteen issues of Der Orchideengarten in English with the original artwork sans editorials and ads. John Hirschhorn-Smith of Side Real Press has done the layout of the stories and artwork while I have done the translations. Here is a link to #14: Der Orchideengarten Vol 1 No 14

If you will indulge me I will post links for each issue after this post to update everyone. In answer to some questions and speculation I am currently finishing up Lemuria Book 2 by Karl Hans Strobl and plan to go live with it before the end of June next month. After that I begin work on the long promised Hanns Heinz Ewers Volume III. Sorry it has taken so long to get to these but life has been a bit difficult these past few years.
