Re: Favorite composers?

I listen to a lot of Chopin, Debussy, Bach and Strauss when I read. Like Auditor, I'm huge fan of the solo piano.

If you haven't read Bernhard's The Loser, check it out. The novel pairs nicely with Glenn Gould's debut album of Bach's Goldberg Variations . . . It also helps that the novel is actually about the genius of Glenn Gould, and the nega-ripple effect of genius on those who aren't, and never will be . . .

Arthur Rubinstein, (Chopin) Nocturnes:

I read every one of Michel Houellebecq's novels while listening to this on loop:

This is beautiful . . .

Claude Debussy, Clair de Lune:

Claude Debussy:

Glenn Gould, (Bach) Goldberg Variations:

Johann Strauss:

The special quality of hell is to see everything clearly down to the last detail. And to see all that in the pitch darkness!
- Yukio Mishima, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion

Re: Favorite composers?

Krzysztof Penderecki.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Favorite composers?

- Off the top of my head; Erik Satie, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, and perhaps most notably, the almost-unknown Leszek (Lech) Jankowski:

"When a man is born. . .there are nets flung at (his being) to hold it back from flight. You talk to me of nationality, language, religion. I shall try to fly by those nets." - James Joyce

I used to write to the Ravenous soundtrack by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn on repeat.

Re: Favorite composers?

A few years ago I saw "Stars of the Lid" in Leeds and as an encore they played the most sublimely beautiful piece of music. I was so astounded by it that I went up to one of them (I don't know whether it was Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie) and ignorantly gushed. I was told that it had actuially been written by Arvo Pärt. This is their version of his beautiful Fratres:

Re: Favorite composers?

I've not been a fan of much of Max Richter's work, but this album really works for me. It's had quite an influence on my own compositions:
