Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

The recent Halloween-themed threads had me thinking about Haunted Houses as a specific topic. Haunted buildings - of all kinds - are some of the most venerable and beloved settings for tales of the Uncanny since the dawn of literature.

What makes your top list of Haunted Houses tales? Here is a short (and inadequate) list of personal favorites:

Favorite Haunted House Short Stories
The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
The Red Tower by Thomas Ligotti
Dr. Locrian's Asylum by Thomas Ligotti
The Shunned House by H.P. Lovecraft
Dreams in the Witch House by H.P. Lovecraft
The Diary of Alonzo Typer by H.P. Lovecraft
The Damp Chamber by Frank Chigas

Favorite Haunted House Novels
Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake (non-supernatural)
The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson
Beloved by Toni Morrison
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
The Sorcerer’s House by Gene Wolfe
Deadfall Hotel by Steve Rasnic Tem
The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury
The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
Malpertuis by Jean Ray
Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco
The Shining by Stephen King

(edit - added this one for the haunted home of Thorolf Twist-Foot)
The Erbyggja Saga

Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

Young's Cold Harbour isn't much known these days but without it, you wouldn't have the Matheson or Jackson novels. It's better than either.

Great list, Prince! I totally forgot "The Beckoning Fair One," "Lost Hearts, " and "Seaton's Aunt." Looks like I need to reread more classics!

I am embarrassed to admit that I have yet to read "Cold Harbour," somehow I have kept putting it off. I shall remedy that ASAP.

Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

I'm surprised no one has listed King's The Shining. Not a favorite of mine but it deserves to be listed.

Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

I considered including Salem's Lot, as it includes a haunted house, but I thought I was already pushing the genre consensus with some of my choices. It would be my pick for favourite vampire story – if that's ever a thread.

Does "House of Leaves" qualify?

Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

I would say yes, Revenant.
So would The House and the Brain by Bulwer-Lytton. Also Blackwood's The Empty House and The Listener
and several others including The Damned.
This list could get unwieldy fast.
