Re: Original Quotes

The point when one realizes that in the bloody epic of history, no matter how tyrannical rulers were, they could not have been but with the consent of the innocent, is the point when one realizes that civilization is not a pendulum, but a tightening noose.

"My memories are very confused. There is even much doubt as to where they begin; for at times I feel appalling vistas of years stretching behind me, while at other times it seems as if the present moment were an isolated point in a grey, formless infinity."-- H.P. Lovecraft

Re: Original Quotes

"The optimist would most likely argue, in some form or another, that the bad we see is something of a mystery, although we would see the bad as good if we could somehow view everything as a whole. Why can't we see the good as equally mysterious? Isn't it possible that the good is, appearances to the contrary, quite bad, assuming we could view everything from a great enough distance?"

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"

The Good often appears mysterious and frightening to me

What could be behind it, hidden?
Could it be a deception?
Could it be something more "real" that is tantalizing and often distant, in a way that usually bring frustration and suffering?

All I'll say is that I keep whatever fortune that happens to come my way to myself, for I know that [1] it usually leads to greater problems and [2] sharing said fortune with another person is insensitive given that humanity is, all things considered, unhappy.

All fortune should be handled with a sort of melancholy reserve.

I think you could also do a good job writing a collection of aphorisms, Mr. Veech.

Re: Original Quotes

"Belief in the afterlife is essential for maintaining a healthy economy. The man who cares little for this life is more likely to produce more than he consumes. The enlightened man, on the other hand, tends to consume far more than he produces, thereby becoming a burden to the economic well-being of his fellow citizens. There's nothing which governs his tastes - unless he is a man of good character."

"The prevalence of downtime means the civilized world no longer goes to work - it puts in hours."

"Things appear 'deep' only when something is missing. If one says too much regarding a specific topic, it becomes commonplace."

"The world is such an awful place that it’s difficult to feel shame concerning one’s guilty pleasures."

"A quick trip to Walmart is an efficient way to calm one's sexual drive."
