Re: The X-Files script that was too bleak to air

Great to hear Penguin will be republishing Conspiracy. I wonder if Tom tinkered with it or will write the intro or afterword. Or perhaps some additional bonus material?

Was Michigan Basement originally written as an X-Files episode? Would love to see that published somewhere down the line.

Thanks but I'm referring to the version that was retooled as a standalone spec script with the X-files connections gouged completely out of the story. Is that draft available online as well?

No, it's not and is sadly out of print.

It's only available secondhand, and the cost is usually outrageous.

Thank you for this. I was in the position opposite to Jaded: I'd never read the original. I am pleasantly surprised by how different they are!

I would add, as a side note, that the revised script is not simply a exercise in "gouging out the X-Files connections". For one thing, it's more than twice the length of the original!

That's what I was hoping, and now I'm even more keen to read it.

Re: The X-Files script that was too bleak to air

I had my copy of the script bound as a single little hardcover so I can have a physical copy of it. I adore it and I think they really captured the dynamic between Mulder and Scully well, the dialogue between the two of them made it really seem like an episode. As for the standalone version, I haven't read it yet, but I was lucky enough to find a copy for sale (packaged with an audio cd) from a vendor at ReaderCon a few years ago!

Thomas Ligotti - interview - The Black Aether

I've tried posting this interesting new-ish Ligotti interview to this forum twice without success, so I will just stick it to the end of this thread. Maybe someone else can put it in its own thread.

Re: The X-Files script that was too bleak to air

I actually don't think it's a problem that Ligotti's script was rejected. The important thing is that it still remains as something of literary value - irrespective of whether or not it was turned into a TV show.

I think the script would actually make a great Kndle single, as well as maybe a small deluxe collector's edition, where it could be linked and marketed with X Files DVDs or something. Then X Files fans could see what a superior ending their show might have had if the producers weren't such wusses about ruling out a non-conventional, but utterly cool final installment for the series.

But even if it never goes beyond a link that can be accessed on the internet, that still more than justifies Ligotti's making the effort to write it.
