Anyone watched the first episode? Reactions are more than good so far.

Re: The Handmaid's Tale (2017 TV Series)
The Handmaid's Tale review – timely adaptation scares with dystopian dread | Television & radio | The Guardian I don't have a Hulu account, but I may try it after the series concludes. I remember when Atwood's novel came out and the many positive reviews. I even liked the film starring Natasha Richardson, Robert Duvall, and Fay Dunaway, although just looking at the RT website it appears I was one of the few that did. This kind of dystopian scenario will always be lurking just around the corner. Men like Pence are the embodiment of this dystopian threat.

I have not read the story, my wife has. We watched the first three episodes and were both repeatedly reduced to leaky-eyed wrecks. As Sean Thompson said, it felt like someone had been stomping on my soul. So yeah, it's really good.

I'll check it out. I could do with a show to watch. The Leftovers is back, but I want to binge that all in one go when the season is done.

Re: The Handmaid's Tale (2017 TV Series)
There are parts of the world, like Saudi Arabia or parts of India, where this is indeed everyday reality for women without any hope of that changing anytime soon. And Saudi elite tends to be extremely well educated, often in the most prestigious Western institutions...
And, people don't realize how easy it is for societies to slide into this in spite of all.

Re: The Handmaid's Tale (2017 TV Series)
True for countries where there is no strong tradition of self-government and republican institutions. But I can't think of one country in the West that has backslid into a patriarchal theocracy. And I believe many are, indeed, talking about the show and book as timely in America's current political context.

Are abortion laws really in a good or secure state in America?
There are communities in the west that are pretty miserable for women still. Not just immigrant communities either. Once heard of a chemist in Texas who shouted at a girl who tried to buy birth control for a related health problem.

Re: The Handmaid's Tale (2017 TV Series)
The idea that America, Britain, France, Switzerland or Germany could backslide into Patriarchy is simply unrealistic (yes, I'm tempted to say nuts).
Wasn't feminism about choice for women? I wish men would shut up on abortion and some women learn tolerance. The laws are not going to be overturned even by a Conservative Court. There would be too much chaos and we know the conservatives are gutless lol. Many women are against abortion--I'm pro-death, myself--and it takes a hell of a lot of arrogance to dismiss these women. It's about choice, guys. Not the Liberal Progressive agenda. As a Pro-Deather, I believe in freedom, something apparently a lot of you good folk don't.

If women are against abortions then they shouldn't have them. It's not really about choice if their choice is to remove the choice of others. |
