Re: Trump

Well, Hidden X, perhaps civility is dead in politics. Perhaps Trump drove a stake through its heart. But was it even there in the first place? And is this latest development a good or bad thing? Damned if I know.

I should have clarified that I'm scared of being punched at a bus stop or harassed if I say how I voted. If people lose respect for me for how I voted or say they can't really be bothered with me anymore I'm okay with that. I know I'm not going to punch or harass anyone who voted in any direction.

James--this one's for you!
Bernie is making the point I've made in previous posts: Trump is hardly a stupid or incompetent man. Who else could have accomplished what he did?

Someone else posted Burroughs here earlier, I believe. I often think of this passage when I contemplate the direction of the modern world:

Yes, of course. However, some of us (as Robert pointed out) are in actual physical danger.
I can forgive a friend a great many things, opinions the easiest of them, but a friend (for example) voting for the right, even if because of policy totally unrelated to race or religion, means that he's contributing to the influence of a political movement that strenghtens many in the conviction that i am, by 'race' and religion, some kind of subhuman. How could i forgive a friend for putting me in danger?

Some things are not abstractions anymore.

The Western Lands, together with A Book of Dreams, easily his best, most complete artistic statement, i think. Thanks for reminding me of that voice. (That voice!)

Re: Trump

Trump's nominee for Secretary of Education is a veritable horror show: vehemently anti-socialist, anti-union christian fundie.

Posters here are dominantly whites with christian ancestry, so they really aren't in positions where they are directly, palpably threatened by the far right in this moment.
