Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
My theory isn't so outlandish after all! Lynch influences Ligotti, who influences Lynch in return. Good art runs on cross-pollination.

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
I was a member there for a few months until I was permanently banned for arguing with the admin and their friends. I was guaranteeing them we'd see a trailer with new footage at some point. They were calling me a troll and telling me it wasn't happening. When I stood up for myself I was permanently banned without a warning. And of course, I was right, we did get two trailers of new footage a few weeks before the premiere. It's a shame, as I enjoyed dugpa before that. And I knew I was right, which was making keeping my cool a bit hard. Ultimately, I realized dugpa is run like a high school, with cliques. Folks in the clique can be as insulting and demeaning as they want, those outside the clique get no leeway, no warnings.

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
Tonight's episode was amazing.
I just love the slow slow pacing - that scene in the Roadhouse where most of the shot was of a bar tender sweeping the floor. I love the sound design (done by Lynch). Coopers voice in the prison (whenever he has a visitor) sounds like it's coming from another dimension. My favorite line tonight

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
Fantastic episode.
I suppose it could be called "The Info-dump Episode", but Lynch still managed to maintain a perfect balance with the moody, meditative shots (like the floor cleaning) and the deeply weird stuff (like the guest appearance of The Evolution of the Arm). I nearly cheered when Lynch/Cole started whistling the theme from Fellini's Amarcord. The title means "I remember" and, as he couldn't get the end bit right, he was effectively trying to remember "I remember".

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
Lately, I haven't been able to stop thinking of all of the Blue Velvet connections in Twin Peaks:
The most obvious being Laura Dern as Diane But also the Hope Lange's connection via her ex-husband Don Murray (who plays Bushnell Mullins) and her son Christopher Murray (who plays one of the South Dakota cops who find the "body" in the librarian's apartment). Also, DoppleCoop feels like the lawful-evil version of Frank Booth - stylish leather jacket, but no mystery gas. I can't stop thinking about the music either. I keep hoping that Neko Case is invited to give an end-of-episode performance.

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
I can't stop thinking about Twin Peaks, period. It's ridiculous. I'm addicted. I've seen every new episode at least four or five times. My wife is beginning to worry about me. I haven't picked up a book since the premiere, as what little free time I have between work, free lance work, and being a husband and dad, is now all about this obsession.
David Lynch might be my single favorite artist in any medium. Mark Frost is a criminally underrated writer and simply does not get enough credit for his work here and on the original series. And Kyle MacLachlan and Naomi Watts are at the top of their games, truly great actors that giving brilliant performances. Kyle is playing three different archetypes that haunt the typical Westerner male struggling through a midlife crisis. Is he a cool tough guy that gets all kinds of pussy? Is he a middle-aged slough who has mailed it in and couldn't care less about his family, career? Or is he the good guy that wants to protect and serve (especially women, who he sees as vulnerable and helpless)? And Naomi Watts' Janey-E is just awesome. She is that strong, hold it together no matter what woman that we don't see in movies very often. Maybe in British films once in a while. But I've know women like her. My Grandma Phyllis was this way. She picked up the slack for those around her, never made excuses or felt sorry for herself, never held the day before against you once the sun came up. She was just an ass-kicker, like Janey-E. I like that she is a tiny little thing too, she has trouble closing the trunk of the car, but she's still tougher than a leather boot--- this too reminds me of Grandma ;P.

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
Just watched episode 7 again (and will watch again onn Sunday before episode 8).
I can't help but notice how much Richard Beymer (who plays Ben Horne) looks like pre-retirement David Letterman. I got a big kick out of Sheriff Truman skyping with Doc Hayward - especially the clunky hidden monitor that would've been state of the art in the 1960s. The ominous rumble lurking underneath Sleepwalk (during the end credits) was perfect. Spoilery speculation: I think someone earlier mentioned the possibility of Richard Horne being Audrey's son. I wonder if DoppleCoop impregnated her while she was (still is?) in a coma at thehospital. This seems like a sneaky tribute to Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her.

Re: Twin Peaks - Series 3
I thought the scene with Ben and Beverly trying to locate the hum was Lynchian gold. And Beymer seemed more comfortable than he did in the awkward scene with Jerry in his office during episode one. Where is Sarah Palmer? She is such an interesting character to me, I've always felt she is underutilized. Unless it's an intentional thing-- she is meant, like Laura's prom queen photo, to haunt the audience more than advance plot.

I can't wait to see what's happened to Big Ed. I'm glad that Sheryll Lee gets a credit in all episodes. I'm guessing that Sarah Palmer will start having visions again once DopplCoop is in the vicinity.
