Mullholland Drive

Hi,

I've finally just seen this movie during the week-end (I had the DVD in a drawer for quite a long time, but it wasn't the right time for me to watch it until then, if you know what I mean...).

I am a big fan of David Lynch, and I was not a bit disappointed, (but really confused with what I saw). On more than one occasion, Mulholland Drive made me think strongly of Ligotti. Terrifying bums and bizarre theaters are pretty evident common points, but also the kind of corporate horror oozing from the scenes with the italian "producers"...

Of course it is not a horror movie (or is it?), and thinking about it, a lot of Lynch's obsessions are shared with Ligotti. But damn! That was really good!

salon.com has a pretty good analysis of Mulholland Drive where they go through the movie and try to explain what exactly is going on. It's a pretty good essay, and filled with ideas not immediately obvious.

I recently saw the movie and that was one of the few times I had to go online and look up what the hell was going on in the movie. Salon.com was the explanation I read and it did a pretty thorough job at that.

Mulholland Drive used to be my favorite movie back in 2001 when I saw it in the cinema. To tell the truth, I regret having read that salon.com analysis, because it only narrowed the possibilities of interpretation. In my opinion, Lynch's movies do not have one single meaning and the viewers should be able to try to interpret them the way they feel them. As Lynch suggests throughout his works, the plotlines of his movies do not constitute puzzles that can be solved with every piece fitting in.

Hopefully, I already forgot that analysis (I've read it just one week after watching the film) and now I might try to contemplate that oneiric work once again.

I'm a great fan of Lynch and can see his positive echoes of Ligotti.

Watch out...the Mullholland Drive DVD that I have is a single track, so it really makes it a pain to stop and start again. Be sure to only pause. Great movie though. And it definitely does require several viewings.

I saw it five times when it came out. I love this movie, especially the theatre scene and the encounter with the Cowboy. I can't gush enough about this movie. I've heard that the dvd was set up intentionally with only one track so that you'd be forced to watch it in one sitting. I'm glad it's like that. This isn't a movie for people who need to refill their soda and then go the the bathroom a million times.

Actually, what I heard is that the DVD isn't a single track so you have to watch it in one sitting. Any decent modern DVD player has memory capability so you can stop the DVD and simply restart it when you want to.

The reason he didn't chapter the movie is that he was afraid that people would try to rearrange the scenes in the movie to be in correct time order. If you play the chapters in the original Memento backwards you could see the movie in its "normal" time sequence, rather than the one you watch when you see the movie as intended (back to front). This was remedied when they rereleased Memento with the option of playing the movie backwards.

Anyway, he thought people would rearrange the movie to try to get it to make more sense. I'm pretty sure he's planning on doing this with every DVD he is releasing from now on. It's a bit of a pain but you gotta give the guy credit for having the balls to say that you have to watch the movie the way he intended.

Masterpiece. To me, this is definitely a horror film. The classic tropes just don't work as well these days. For me, horror must now reside in the mind of a protagonist, a fractured psyche. We know there are no ghosts, goblins, or boogeymen, but we still aren't sure how powerful the human mind is, and a loss of sanity and/or dissociation is on the table for just about anyone, give the right triggers. That is my true nightmare (apart from something happening to my wife or kids)-- the loss of my identity.

I think the still taboo topic of suicide also makes this film horrific. It's a film about shattered dreams and rejection. Some people react violently to that kind of thing, the way Diane does here. The double whammy of murder/suicide, a common yet nightmarish thing.
