Re: Movie Recommendations

In The Mouth Of Madness is about a Lovecraftian writer but you've probably seen it. Pretty cheesy but it has strong moments.

Re: Movie Recommendations

This little-known Anglo-Spanish film of the macabre deserves to be better known. It was scripted by the Lon Chaney of Spain; Jacinto Molina Alvarez whom is better known as Paul Naschy, though he does not appear in the film. It was inspired by a short tale by Spaniard poet Gustavo Adolfo Becquer and borrows the titular ghouls of Amando de Ossorio's Blind Dead films. Do not let the rating throw you, this is a rather subtle film in comparison to the more repulsive films of this era. Extremely difficult to find yet worth the search.

I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world, to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.
-- J.G. Ballard

Re: Movie Recommendations

H-G is talking about this one: La Cruz del Diablo (1975).

It's odd this film's been brought up, because I was hunting around for it for ages; and it turned up (I think) on Youtube and I swiftly downloaded it. Anyway I watched it, back in April, but when I looked for it again I couldn't find the link.

Yeh, it's not bad at all. I like the druggie (opium?) aesthete investigator. Some people, I think, see it as connected with The Blind Dead series. Anyway, maybe they shared the same make-up SFX artist.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I suppose I should make a recommendation while I'm here.

This one, I'm sure, has been referred to before. It's very old-school though made in 2007, is somewhat in the Caligari mould, and almost wholly silent.

Quirky as well as spooky though...

Re: Movie Recommendations

The most underrated horror film I can think of is Nomads (1986). People hate it. For me, it seemed as if the director was channeling Ramsey Campbell at times and creating in the process a dark tale of demonic Inuit spirits moved to an urban setting. For me, it worked quite well. You'll probably hate it.
