I don't think it is just you, Candy. Leastways, I don't see anything, either.

Dear Candy and Pet,

Sorry about that! I just replaced the image I originally posted with another one. Hope this new one shows up!

Thanks to you both for giving me a heads-up,

Nicole

Yes, Nicole, it's there now all right. Thank you.

I love the inexplicable tower and the ghostly Coca Cola advert.

Someone recently gave me a New Jersey T-shirt. It's yellow and says New Jersey The greatest country in the world. Your photos go some way to demonstrate how just this claim is. New Jersey is also where Daphne & Celeste -- the world's greatest singing duo -- come from.

Here I am, thinking that I'm one of the world's leading authorities on the great nation of New Jersey, and I've never heard of Daphne & Celeste! I just looked them up on Wikipedia, and see that Celeste was born in Newark, north Jersey . . . Her accent probably sounds like mine. Daphne is from Long Beach, which is "down the shore" (as we say locally.) Thank you for putting me on to these two, Pet . . . I need to give them a listen!

Yours,

N.

Re: Ghost Towns around the World/ Images of crumbling symbols of modernity

I saw a documentary the other night concerning TL's home city, Detroit. As a result of collapsing infrastructure within the automotive industry, the last decade has witnessed a mass exodus out of the city. Since 1990 over 30 000 people, or so the programme suggested, have packed up and left, leaving behind a trail of empty buildings, rotting storefronts, abandoned factories. Apparently Detroit is quickly becoming America's next ghost town. I wonder how deeply this broken landscape influenced the imagination of the young Ligotti. I am surprised that no one has posted any images of decaying buildings from Detroit. Hint...

Matthew, I live only about 65 or 70 miles from Detroit. Not in my backyard, I say! , , and !

Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

I don't live anywhere near Detroit, but for years I remember seeing news stories on Halloween about Hell Night a.k.a. Devil's Night in Detroit. A Detroit tradition.

It's now referred to in the "local" media as Angel's Night. I assume that seraphims can still flick a Bic...

I do remember the scene from The Crow movie in which the gravel-voiced Michael Wincott complains that Devil's Night has lost its true heart of mischief and mayhem. "Do you know what they have now?" he asks his fellow ruffians. "Devil's Night greeting cards. Isn't that precious!"
