Anthropoid

Anthropoid - 2016 - 7/10

Overlooked World War II thriller about Operation Anthropoid.
The plot to assassinate SS Obergruppenführer of Czechoslovakia, Reinhard Heydrich.
Told entirely from the Czech resistance point of view.
The “based on” elements are easy to identify and ignore (such as any love interests).
Measured pace spotlights planning, internal arguing, and constant fear of betrayal.
Unlike other films, this offers the buildup, the event, the aftermath.
Breathtaking cinematography, by the way.

SiREN

SiREN - 2016 - 5/10

B-Horror flick with imaginative touches.
Quartet of fratboy males out celebrating stag party for soon-to-wed mate.
They find a Gothic sporting house nestled in remote backwoods.
Skimpy hotties, rooms catering to perversion, occult entertainment.
Running the brothel is necromancer Nyx (homage to Lord Of Illusions?) who peddles a special girl.
Picture her as a lesser demon, if you will, the ravenous kind.

Despite low expectations early on, my hopes rallied, only to wither in disappointment.
Budget restrictions aside, filmmakers are adroit in imbuing this with atmospheric quality.
The whole Nyx and outré environment is more than one typically sees in fratboy horror.
Naw, the film is sunk by the four friends, terrible actors all, given puerile dialogue.

La Femme Bourreau

La Femme Bourreau - 1968 - 6/10
AKA - The Woman Executioner

Tempted to score this higher, for the strangeness factor.
Surreal Expressionistic film of man who copycats a serial killer.
Confused, abused man begins affair with his therapist / parole officer.
He also identifies with a recently executed female serial killer and starts wearing with wigs and heels.
Film is loaded with jump cuts and the narrative often leaps.
The result is borderline incoherence, yet it has a great score and the “look” is particularly striking.
For you cult buffs, Jean Rollin was in the acting credits.

I, Daniel Blake

I, Daniel Blake - 2016 - 6/10

Cheerless tale of everyman Daniel Blake.
Carpenter, out of work after a heart attack, caught in the “medical care” bureaucracy.
Mr Blake fills out forms, meets Nat’l Health reps, watches his money and time decline.
He tries to remain hopeful and earnest throughout, but the system is broken and pitiless.
Those of you familiar with director Ken Loach know what to expect.
Others, this will be an enervating, if not preordained, slog.

Caught On A Train

Caught On A Train - 1980 - 7/10

Publishing agent climbs the battered Orient Express, and finds misunderstandings and gamesmanship.
Initially, all is fine. Fellow passengers, even an attractive American girl he tries to impress.
Then the imperious, elderly woman storms into the cabin.
Superbly acted test of wills will thrill live theatre buffs.
People who have ridden some older trains will recognize the discomfiture and disorientation.
Especially European border crossing checks, which sadly, one only finds in Eastern Europe now.

Night Train To Lisbon

Night Train To Lisbon - 2013 - 7/10

Jeremy Irons plays Swiss professor who, after an encounter, stumbles across a slim philosophical / confessional book by Portuguese writer.
He becomes bewitched by the “goldsmith of words,” and catches the train to Lisbon to meet the writer.
Once there, he interviews family and friends, and teases the backstory of broken dreams, lost love, betrayal, and torture, set during the Portuguese revolution of the mid 70s.
Dual narratives dovetail Irons’ deepening quest with the excavation of memory.
Most of the film was shot in Lisbon, with its narrow, cobblestone lanes and breathtaking views of the night washed city below and the distant Sao Jorge Castelo. Especially at night, from the Alfama, Lisbon is enchanting.
Highly rewarding film for those who enjoy following the thread to wherever it leads.

Competent low budget production, though predictable and slow paced.

Well, I liked it. Among the better American horror movies of recent years. Maybe 6.5/10?

A quiet achiever, certainly, but it works well overall and ends strongly. Much better than the other films I've seen from this director (except maybe Cabin Fever 2).

That makes no sense at all. He owns the press, he can publish whatever he damn well pleases (within legal limits, anyway), whether you approve of it or not. That's how free speech works.

The people who tried to shut him down because they don't like what he publishes? Yeah, they're the one who have a problem with the idea.

Not Quite Hollywood

Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! - 2008 - 3/10 or 7/10

Documentary of Australian gonzo, exploitation films from the 70's onward.
Car crashes, nudity, cheap ripoffs of current hits.
These paved the way for Mad Max breakthroughs and popular fare of today such as Wolf Creek and Storm Warning.
Hosted by Quentin Tarentino.
Grindhouse fans, prepare to enjoy. Arthouse crowd, move along.

Georgia O'Keefe

Georgia O'Keefe - 2009 - 6/10

Biography of painter O'Keefe (Joan Allen) and husband Alfred Steiglitz (Jeremy Irons).
Well acted, well photographed, shifting from Manhattan to the Southwest desert.
Probably should have been a mini-series.
As shown, this seems more a sketch of mannerisms and iconic paintings.
