Re: Recent Reading

Last night I devoured The Hound of the Baskervilles. A thick Gothic atmosphere and a brooding moor landscape bred a miasma of palpable supernatural fear and dark folk mystery. By some margin the finest Holmes novel so far, and, along with The Adventure of the Speckled Band and Silver Blaze, one of the great sleuth's finest cases.

While the previous two novels were let down by off-kilter pacing and elongated flashbacks, here the story was given full room to expand and breathe, aided by Doyle's judicious move to keep Holmes out of the narrative for the middle portion, which aided the atmosphere and tension considerably as Holmes is a character who is too powerful to be kept around for too long a portion of time if the danger and helplessness are both to be ramped up.

I then watched the 2009 Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey Jr. action film, which I expected to despise, but it was surprisingly entertaining fluff. I loathe modern Hollywood and its blockbusters, but this was pleasant and pulpish Indiana Jones fodder. Hardly as essential as Brett or Rathbone, but a nice distraction. I may check out the sequel.

Re: Recent Reading

Continuing my way through Michael Cisco's 'The Narrator'. Roughly two thirds of the way through it now.

Last night I finished Simon P. Murphy's short story collection 'His Master's Wretched Organ', which I really rather enjoyed. I gave it the full five stars on Goodreads at any rate.

I am about to start Equus by Peter Shaffer.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Recent Reading

Currently reading La-Bás and The Consumer. Can't read either for too long at once, as the former is really dense and the latter is really terrifying.

This is my life. This is my damnation. This is my only regret--that I ever was born.

Yeah, The Consumer is perhaps the most unrelentingly depressing book I've read.

All of this programs the death of reading. And reading is the drinking of strange wine.

I have to ask, how on earth did you get your hands on a copy of The Consumer? I've been trying to find one but the cheapest paperback available is going for over $200. Is an online copy available somewhere?

For my part I got it from Henry Rollins when it was new, so I just paid the cover price. I don't know what possessed me, since I did not own any Swans and knew virtually nothing about M. Gira.
