Yes, he did. In some of his letters he reveals himself as quite a funny man. His formal attempts to write humorous stories and verse, though, are mostly downright unfortunate.
I can name at least one story that cracks me up every time I read it:
The Terrible Old Man. That short is rife with tongue-in-cheek humour, especially in its descriptions of the unfortunate and soon-to-be exanimate "businessmen", their plots and dilemmas.

Another example of his humor, from The Dunwich Horror, specifically an excerpt from Wilbur's journal:

"Shot Elam Hutchins's collie Jack when he went to bite me, and Elam says he would kill me if he dast. I guess he won't."

Yeah, the italics in that last sentence are mine, but in my many readings, that is the way that sentence SHOULD be read, with stress of those two words. How can that situation be anything but funny, in a black sort of way? Just imagine trying to confront/threaten the hulking, shabby, goatish, and not to mention pistol-packing Wilbur Whateley who has just killed your dog...poor Elam!

Yrs,
-J
When I wrote what I did, I had in mind (for example) the heavy-handed humour of Old Bugs, rather than the droll touches one finds in some of his horror fiction. But you're right, his horror stories are shot through with a grim humour.

Re: More on Lovecraft

Has anyone read the new Gene Wolfe Lovecraftian novel, AN EVIL GUEST, recently published by Tor? I've just read a wee review in the new issue of WEIRD TALES and it sounds intriguing. The book is set in my favourite of Lovecraft's mythical towns, Kingsport, which alone makes it something that deeply allures. I'm just on my way to google it and see if I can find more expansive reviews.

Re: More on Lovecraft

I have not heard of this, but it sounds interesting as can be. Kingsport is my most favored locale in Lovecraft Country as well, Wilum. 'The Strange High House in the Mist' and 'The Terrible Old Man' have always been two of my absolute favorites among The Old Gent's shorter pieces. Tell us how the book is if you read it first. Yr. Re: More on Lovecraft

I'm curious about it. Lots of the reviews at amazon.com have not been too praiseworthy -- they make the book sound like a mess of confusion. I've never read anything of his, so I was curious if anyone here is a fan. Yes, Kingsport is a fascinating locale. I've written many tales set within its misty confines.

Gene Wolfe is an elegant writer. His writing has a quiet quality to it, and that is perhaps why he slips through ending up on my "favorite writers" list. Wolfe is a favorite writer of mine. If Gene Wolfe were more audacious such as Ellison or Malzberg, he might spring more readily to my mind. Recommended.

Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

Re: More on Lovecraft

Thanx, Phil. You've convinc'd me to buy the book. Anything set in Kingsport is pretty much a must for me anyway.
