The Incredible Robert Baldick, a short-lived occult detective series from the B.B.C.

One of the latest interests of mine is British phantasy and supernatural programmes, often from the 1960s to the 80s. The best known of these is Doctor Who, but there is also The Omega Factor, Journey to the Unknown, Sapphire and Steel (which has its own thread here on T.L.O.), The Stone Tape, Quatermass, Children of the Stones, and this buried little curio from 1972.
The Incredible Robert Baldick was written by Terry Nation, the Welshman responsible for the creation of the Daleks of Doctor Who. Like many of these British weird programmes, Baldick belongs, more or less, to the occult detective subgenre, the same as Algernon Blackwood's Dr. John Silence or William Hope Hodgson's Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder. Alas, only one episode of this series was ever produced, and it looked promising in its Nigel Kneale-esque fusion of supernatural horror with scientific trappings. The main character, excellently played by magnificent Englishman Robert Hardy, is a late Victorian scientist and inventor-professor figure, who, with his two devoted servants, investigates an ancient abbey of ill repute where a primeval evil broods. The full episode can be seen online, though there is a timer on the right side that is not too much of a distraction. It certainly is an atmospheric treat worth viewing.
