Re: Favorite Bands?

Don't know if anyone here has heard of Fantomas, which is one of the latest projects from Mike Patton, formerly of Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. I saw them live a few weeks back without really knowing anything about them, but have since checked out a couple of their CDs.

Their music is basically a strange hard rock cut-up style, heavily influenced by classic horror films. Their Director's Cut CD is made up exclusively of cover versions of film theme songs, including those from The Omen and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Their version of the Rosemary's Baby theme is particularly chilling.

Definitely a good adventure pick if you're looking for something new to listen to. The hard rock resumes of the band members (Slayer and the Melvins being the most prominent entries) shouldn't dissuade those who don't like heavy metal, since Fantomas relegates the hard rock thunder to the back seat behind creepy atmospherics and an ever-present sense of menace. Good stuff!

I love Fantomas...Delirium Cordia was an excellent dark ambient ish album (I love the ending haha). The new one is great too. They're coming to LA and are playing with Terry Bozzio on drums instead of Dave Lombardo...I want to see it, but it's sold out (bastards)

Mr. Bungle was so ####ing great. I'm crestfallen they broke up.

by the way, if I haven't mentioned them already, if you'd like to experience the apocalypse from the safety and (relative) comfort of your own home, look no further than The Axis of Perdition.

The Axis of Perdition is the one group who can actually compose songs that actually frightened me...the songs are misanthropic, apocalyptic, and heavily layered...the songs revolve around the demise of mankind, decay, and all things of that sort. Not just the death of man, but the death of everything. An eloquent passage:

"The stars are screaming loud
The blind idiot god stumbles
A mind giving way
Gnashing worms from the other side of shadows

And in the centre of everything...
The swirling nuclear chaos

The children of the dead sun
The rejoicing damned
The 13 blessed helix
Marching from myth to megalomania...

The universe is crumbling to dust
The atoms themselves are coming apart
The weak flesh withers and dies
Nail and tooth, token trophies"

the first album, The Ichneumon Method, was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and the Silent Hill series...very cool ####

Re: Favorite Bands?

Glad to hear that Delirium Cordia is worthwhile - that's one of the Fantomas discs I haven't heard yet, but I'll have to look for that one.

Interesting that they're playing with Terry Bozzio in LA instead of Dave Lombardo. When I saw Fantomas in Seattle recently, Lombardo led a drum trio thing immediately before Fantomas hit the stage. The drum trio did only a couple of numbers, but if you can imagine a "three-way" Lombardo drum solo you can imagine how well it set the stage for Fantomas...

Re: Favorite Bands?

Walking through Tower Records in the Village in New York a few months back I came across a CD from Zombi. It's called Cosmos and each of the 9 tracks are named for a constellation. The reason I picked it up is that a sticker on it explained that the band was creating music specifially inspired by Goblin's music for horror films (Suspiria, Tenebrea, Dawn of the Dead, etc) and John Carpenter's soundtracks (Halloween, The Thing). It's really atmospheric and beautiful - literally an original 70's horror film soundtrack composed and recorded in 2003. Five out of five from me!

Re: Favorite Bands?

Unknown, is Axis of Perdition a metal band? Or something more experimental/unorthodox? Sounds interesting...

they are indeed a metal band. Although their latest efforts have been focusing more on more on their dark ambient side, it's still very metal.

don't bother looking for their cds in stores...you won't find them. Your best bet would be online (like The End Records Omega) or downloading it with DC++, mIRC, or whatever program you use.

or if you have AIM, I'd be more than happy to send it to you
