Re: David Lynch
About Mulholland Drive: I was 17-18 and had never seen anything by Lynch. We went with my father, a Lynch enthusiast, to one of the few movie theatres that showed the film in Buenos Aires. It was one of those old movie theatres with leather seats and curtains covering the screen, which was quite appropiate for Mulholland Drive.
I remember leaving the place with a huge smile in my face; I had never seen anything like it before and I recall my father saying: "That mother####er Lynch" in a respectful way. We ended up having coffee and pie (!) in a coffehouse at 1:00 AM and spent around two hours discussing what we had just seen.

I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: David Lynch
- Ah, that's a neat story! The closest experience I've ever had to that is when I was 13 and obsessed with seeing Eraserhead, and while on summer vacation I called every video store in the big city of Fargo looking for a copy, and after finding one place that had it, got my uncle, who had a tendency to spoil my brother and I when we were younger, to drive me over to and pick it up; afterwards, when I was watching the film for the first time, my uncle walked by and after watching along for a few minutes, turned to me and said "I think the guy that made this was the biggest bullsh*tter who ever lived", and left the room.
(Also, the only Lynch film I ever had the nerve to watch with my parents was The Straight Story, alas. . .)

Re: David Lynch
I made the mistake of showing a girlfriend Mulholland Drive as the first Lynch film she's ever seen. Needless to say, she ain't with me anymore. Not a starter Lynch. Lost Highway or Twin Peaks are starter Lynch films. But let's be honest, there is no "starter Lynch." That would be like a starter punch to the face. He's awesome.

Re: David Lynch
- Weird, I've always considered Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway to be companion films, but to me the former always seemed a far more appropriate introduction to initiate one into the mysteries of Lynch over its darker, more violent, and equally (if not more so) nonlinear sibling, but as you say, where Lynch is considered its all a matter of personal pathology and all bets are off; after all, for me Eraserhead was the perfect choice and has had perhaps more impact on me than any other film I've watched in my life.

Re: David Lynch
I made the mistake of taking an ex-girlfriend to see Inland Empire to the cinema; she walked out after fifteen minutes. I stayed, had a blast and the relationship, unfortunately, continued.
It just happened I really wanted to see the film (the second time I saw anything by Lynch on the big screen, and, sadly, the last one) and she did not know who Lynch was and I am sure she still doesn't. I also consider Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive companion films, but Lost Highway is more of a horror film for me, and it is damn perfect.

Re: David Lynch
Last Lynch story.
I introduced my best friend, a girl I know since I was 6 years old, to Lynch. We watched Lost Highway and then Mulholland Drive, and she disliked the former and loved the latter, so I agree Mulholland Drive works best as an introduction to his work. This girl now loves both films. My little sister now wants to watch some of his films too and mentioned Blue Velvet. Do you think that is a good enough introduction? By the way, she is recovering from back surgery and watching Carnivàle right now, because I convinced my parents and my three sisters to do so, and she is loving it. Also, I love the way Lynch uses horror in his films, for example in the scene were Bob murders Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and the scene were we see a distraught Laura Dern walking in her backyard in Inland Empire. Those two still give me the creeps.

Re: David Lynch
And, finally, I hope Lynch gets to film Ronnie Rocket and Snootworld once Twin Peaks is wrapped.
