Octavia Butler

Any fans here? I've read two of her books, Xeno-genesis (now published as three shorter novels), and Parable of the Sower, which is one of the most frightening books I've ever read, very scary, very depressing. Her last book was her try at vampire lore, "Kindred".

Re: Octavia Butler

I've loved her work since I first read Kindred. The Xenogenesis trilogy is also great. I was fortunate to have met Octavia Butler when I was working at a B&N back in my college days. She came in and asked me if it was ok if she signed any copies of her books on the shelves. Of course I said yes and we talked for about 30 minutes or so about her books as well as Gene Wolfe's works as she was browsing in the store. She was strinkingly tall with this booming yet soft voice and she was extremely kind.

What atttracts me to much of her fiction is that a lot of it has a hint of misanthropy and large doses of pessimism. The example that pops up off the top of my head is how the Oankali aliens use surrogate breeders (ooloi) to perpetuate their species and they do so by using Homo sapiens' cancer genes. In the Xenogenesis world humans are valued only as breeders and this mainly due to our predilection for cancerous cells. Butler kicks out the rungs of the ladder on the Great Chain of Being and humans tumble down to the ground, no longer venerated and their usefulness is simply the happenstance of our cells running riot and killing us off.

Re: Octavia Butler

Great story, Christopher! I would have loved to have met her, just to let her know how much Parable of the Sower messed me up.
