Re: Video Games

Rabid videogamer here. I'm so hardcore it hurts! I'm the sort of person that the hidden bosses and the post-game game were written for.

RPG's for me. Titan Quest at the moment, plus Final Fantasy XII. I am also grinding levels in Disgaea, Disgaea 2, La Pucelle: Tactics and Makai Kingdom. I have uber-bosses to kill. They are mared for the death that I shall (eventually) deliver to them.

Alas, so far I have found no Ligotti-esque games.

Re: Video Games

Is Titan Quest worth the purchase, MorganScorpion?

I have not found any particularly Ligottian games either

Definitely. I've found it to be addictive. Surprisingly it works well on Vista. It has quite a lot of variety, as the game can play very differently according to which type of character you create. So you can have Tank type characters that fight alone; or you can have Nature/Magicians that fight with up to five allies. The replay value is good. However, collecting sets of magical items is very difficult. Even with the TQ Vault add-on.

The game does flicker on my system though (Windows XP). Doesn't stop me playing though.

Re: Video Games

Lovecraftian games seem easier to find than Ligottian games, if one may use such distinctions. I have recently started playing the already-mentioned Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth on my Mac via Fusion and Windows XP. An interesting and fairly fun exercise.

And I see there was an updated version of Alone in the Dark in 2008, has anyone played this? I wonder how different the Wii experience is from the Windows XP experience..

I am afraid that if I found a truly Ligotti-esque game that I would not make it very far. I am usually floored by the direction Mr. Ligotti's stories take, and I would probably be looking for a walk-through all too soon. And what would be the point of that?

Re: Video Games

Upcoming PS3 game Batman: Arkham Asylum certainly has a Ligotti-esque locale, and the rave reviews indicate that it is quite dark (as it should be), but I doubt it would remind me much of Ligotti's stories, Grant Morrison's stories - now maybe. I am only mentioning this because it appears it will have some of the more Ligotti-an, Ligotti-esque, Ligottianian looking characters I've seen in a game so far.

BAA's look for the Scarecrow -

BAA's look for the Joker -

Yes, Zsasz is stupid, but this is a niftier take on him -

Can't find any decent shots of Poison Ivy or the others worth noting yet but you get the point. Actually these characters would and have looked and felt right at home in a Grant Morrison comic as well.

Re: Video Games

Whilst The Scarecrow looks scary with those syringe-fingers; the thought of him trying to open a door whilst wearing them is too funny for words.

Re: Video Games

Anyone looking for a Ligottian-like game should try "Pathologic", by a Russian studio called Icepick Lodge.

It has its small issues, but the game is worth it. You can find some videos on youtube. There's also some information and reviews to be found. One of these reviews called this game "as dark as a Nick Cave murder ballad", so that should be an indicator.

Anyway, people die...
