Re: Weird Short Film of the Day

"The Other Gods" short animated film has a very intriguing history behind it. The creator, Peter Rhodes, was an artist who became friends with Lovecraft in New York. According to info listed at the web pages below, HPL found Rhode's art fascinating and allowed him to read some of his stories before they were published. For his part, PR drew sketches of a number of HPL's creatures in addition to creating animated adaptations of at lest two other HPL stories besides "The Other Gods" (which will be restored in the future. See the links below). In "Pickman's Model", it is also claimed, HPL makes an oblique reference to P.R., as he was wont to do with his friends in his stories. After HPL moved back to Providence he continued to correspond with PR through letters.

If that isn't enough to catch your interest, get this: Peter and his brother were insiders of the NY occult scene, and were, for a short while at least it seems, followers of none other than Aleister Crowley while he was in New York.

Although I am no Lovecraft scholar, last I heard there was no evidence, even circumstantcial evidence, suggesting HPL knew of, or might even have known, Aleister C. If PR really did know Crowley, then, perforce, all bets are off.

Wait, there's more. PR's brother, John, having been inspired by Crowley, went on an evangelical mission upstate after Crowly returned to Europe. That was the last anyone saw of brother John, he disappeared. PR went searching for him but, as it says on one of the web pages below, "[PR] journeys upstate to find out what he can about John's whereabouts. What Rhodes may have discovered about his brother is not known, but he returns to New York a changed man. He turns to Lovecraft's story of "The Other Gods" and seems to find catharsis in its story of a blasphemer who asks too much from his gods.".

I'm not making this up! Read about it for yourself and check out one of PR's weird paintings on these web pages:

Big thanks to Yellowish Haze for posting "The Other Gods" animation short by Peter Rhodes!

Re: Weird Short Film of the Day

That's a fascinating story, hypnogeist. I new nothing about the film nor its creator when I posted it.

For today I have "Bram Stoker's Walpurgis Nacht":

from the director Alex Roman: A FULL-CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art across a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way. Sometimes surreal.
