Of the handful of live shows I have attended, the most memorable was seeing the Pixies in Richmond, just a few weeks after the release of Surfa Rosa in 1988. On this night there were only about 50 people in the club with plenty of open space to mill about. A couple of my friends talked me into going to a show, and we picked The Pixies out of a cluster of flyers pasted to a telephone pole solely on the basis of them being signed to 4AD, as we had never heard of them otherwise. I remember us sitting in a booth joking that based on their name and label they could be a group of diminutive goths with a stage show resembling the Stonehenge scene from This is Spinal Tap. Shortly thereafter, the quiet and rather unassuming occupants in the booth next to us stood up and walked to the stage to proceed into the best live show I have ever witnessed. Granted, I have only seen a few due to my aversion to gatherings, but they actually helped me to transcend the environment, which was no small feat given my mindset of the day. I recall Kim Deal drinking beer while riding the E string of her bass and thinking that she was the coolest girl on the planet. The set included "In Heaven". I was blown away.

Here is another cover by them. Straight ahead rock and roll, nonetheless laced with the taste that only the dark wee ones could deliver.
