Unfilmable: Will Ligotti Frolic Again (in Film)?
I found this nice post from yesterday on the blog "Unfilmable:"
http://unfilmable.blogspot.com/2009/...lic-again.html It provides a comprehensive collection of the many projects Thomas Ligotti has hinted at being turned into film in recent years. Unfortunately, it seems nothing new is in the works right now. Interestingly, though, Brandon Trenz posted in the comments on the blog entry with some further insights.

Re: Unfilmable: Will Ligotti Frolic Again (in Film)?
I had a discussion with Tom several times before about the subject of works of his that would be amenable to translation to film. I don't think he'd mind me saying that we both agreed that in the hands of the right screen writer and right director, My Work Is Not Yet Done has the potential to be a great film. Whether or not that will ever happen remains to be seen, but I imagine that if that film got the right "treatment", so to speak, it could work and work well. Again, it would be all about an effective and thoughtful translation to a screenplay. It could be the mother of all retribution stories, and in a climate that is so anti-corporate, it just might work in the hands of competent people.

Re: Unfilmable: Will Ligotti Frolic Again (in Film)?
I'd like to see one day Kyoshi Kurosawa making a film out of a Thomas Ligotti story. There is a strange affinity between Kurosawa and mr. Ligotti in my opinion, that could produce a masterpiece; but I guess it will just stay a wild dream... Anyway, I'm hoping to open a thread on this prolific film maker soon.

As far as short stories go, I think The Spectacles in the Drawer has a lot of potential if given the right director. The Bungalow House would work if they got the same people who did the sound for Session 9 to do the dream monologue recordings.

Re: Unfilmable: Will Ligotti Frolic Again (in Film)?
The dream monologues of "The Bungalow House" already play in my head as a film because of an experience of sitting and smoking a cigarette in the moonlit darkness of my cluttered and less-than-pristine house shortly after reading the story for the first time several years ago. I saw "The Bungalow House" as I puffed and exhaled. The light and the shadows were inexplicable. They still are, but I can see them. Unfortunately, I am not a filmmaker.
The rights to the Ligotti stories which seem most adaptable to my mind are currently held in other hands. Therefore, In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land begs to be filmed. I believe the rights are still held in the wooden hand of Mrs. Pyk.

Tibet: Carnivals? Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister. Tibet: Gas stations? Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume. Last edited by G. S. Carnivals; 04-18-2009 at 06:02 PM.. |
