61. There’s a rumor about Guillermo del Toro doing something completely ####ing awesome like every 3 months. Almost none of these things will happen.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie

The last I read about this was the studio wouldn't produce the film unless it had a PG-13 rating. Guillermo del Toro held his ground with an R rating. I still can't figure out why. It has been a long time since I read the short novel, but I can't remember anything that would justify an R rating. I can understand where the studio is coming from on this one given the demographic of the film's appeal.

I know, but the guy was responsible for Pan's Labyrinth! The studio should've stepped aside. If this would've been another one of del Toro's passion projects, we could've experienced another masterpiece of cinema.

I mean ... Pan's labyrinth? Right?

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

Concur wholeheartedly, Mr. Veech. Del Toro's genius plus Lovecraft's genius? The mind boggles at the synergistic effect.

I agree, but studios don't think that way. They want a good return on their investment. But even with an R rating, I don't think they would have lost money. We can always hope some studio will cave in. It could be a great film.

The Centipede Press book on del Toro was nominated for a Stoker Award. Great book!

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie

Personally, I'd rather they didn't make a film. As has been said before, the script was a little troubling and if Tom Cruise had been in it, it seems like Del Toro would be more likely to lose control. The original story has barely any action and big special effects movies are rarely any good.

But get a load of all this!
All of Your Favorite SFF TV and Movie Adaptations in the Works | Tor.com

Most of this stuff will probably never come out and a lot of the stuff that does probably won't be good but I'm amazed just how many things are in the works. Further down the list is stuff that's definitely happening.

Will all this create many new readers?

Explanation from few years ago included similarities to Scott's Prometheus...

Did Prometheus kill Guillermo Del Toro's Mountains of Madness movie?

When asked by message board members further he simply responded: "Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical."
Another reason to dislike that movie...

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie

I guess I'm in the minority that couldn't care less if any of Lovecraft's work never gets visualized. I've always preferred books to film, because atmosphere is a quality that I feel never gets translated well on-screen, and one that Lovecraft's fiction requires more than other. Books allow for reader introspection, imagination and personal projection which are all linked to deeply personal and unique emotions and experiences. is How do you visually represent the unquantifiable, silent and irrational effects of a nightmare in a way that not only represents the story genuinely, but satisfies all the real-world requirements of financial and box-office success? I don't think it's possible these days unless you turn it into a monster movie, which I have no interest in seeing. The thing I love most about Lovecraft's fiction is what it suggests, not what it superficially presents.

As I much as I like Del Toro (except for Crimson Peak) I lost hope about this movie long ago.I am happy with this version:
