I am also happy with this one, especially the soundtrack. Occasionally I find myself looking it up on Youtube for a quick fix.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie

Have you all read del Toro's script? Be careful what you wish for...

I'd still go see it because hopefully they'd have some fascinating visuals, but seeing Tom Cruise fight an army of shoggoths and escape from Cthulhu (!!!!!???) isn't a top priority for me. The fact is that Lovecraft's Mountains would require a huge budget and studios won't part with that much cash for a slow atmospheric investigation with only the slightest hint of action at the end.

Most of the Lovecraft fanboys online act like it'd be a disgrace if Mountains were released as a PG-13 and not the R (?) del Toro demands, which shows how ridiculously out of touch with the source material the creators and intended audience are. Outside of the discovery of the dead crew, which hardly needs to be shown in graphic Saw-level detail, the original story is lacking in grue or sex. This isn't Friday the 13th.

I feel the same way. However, instead of the expedition's leader William Dyer, I would be OK watching Tom Cruise play the Renfield-like, secondary character of Danforth, who goes permanently mad at the end. Cruise's usual 'twitchiness' might actually serve well in that role.

But Danforth, released from his piloting and keyed up to a dangerous nervous pitch, could not keep quiet. I felt him turning and wriggling about as he looked back at the terrible receding city, ahead at the cave-riddled, cube-barnacled peaks, sidewise at the bleak sea of snowy, rampart-strown foothills, and upward at the seething, grotesquely clouded sky. It was then, just as I was trying to steer safely through the pass, that his mad shrieking brought us so close to disaster by shattering my tight hold on myself and causing me to fumble helplessly with the controls for a moment. A second afterward my resolution triumphed and we made the crossing safely—yet I am afraid that Danforth will never be the same again.

Someone like Idris Elba would make a better, and more modern, Dr. Dyer.

It was a very old version of the script, with forced inclusion of Cthulhu by the studio. but some of the elements were surprising and excelent, precisely the inclusion of the "Dark Man"

The Tom Cruise bit is disappointing to hear. I was not aware of that.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

I actually like Cruise. His casting is just emblematic of the approach a studio want. See the godawful trailer for the new Mummy film.

Never know if these things are myths but I've heard that his contracts demand scenes of him running. The original story has that tunnel run.

Also seemed like Live Die Repeat/Edge Of Tomorrow had a happy ending slapped on, possibly because of his presence.

Yeah, I've always liked Cruise - his best role, I believe, was in Rain Man. Like you said, though, he simply doesn't seem like an appropriate pick.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie

I know you're not supposed to think about what actors are really like when you're watching a film, but for me and probably many others, Cruise's real life has overshadowed everything. Perhaps the international audience doesn't know or care about his crazy life and that's why he's still a big movie star?

I don't feel strongly either way about his acting, so it's not a tragedy. Some people say he's a camera hogger, but I don't know.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie

I don't think The Mountains of Madness would require that large of a budget - I can't see why the effects or locations would need to outstrip Pan's Labyrinth, which was a relatively low budget film by Hollywood standards. Del Toro seems to have caught the blockbuster director syndrome.
