A Poem for the Students Who Disappeared in Mexico

I suspect many here are familiar here with the situation, but in any case, I would like to share this work of a friend of mine, the prestigious Mexican poet David Huerta, with you.

Re: A Poem for the Students Who Disappeared in Mexico

It takes a lot of ability and courage to address such a senseless act of horror in a poem.
It's a fine poem.

Re: A Poem for the Students Who Disappeared in Mexico

I attended a protest for this today. Today is supposed to be an important national holiday (perhaps second only to independence day) but nobody is in the mood to celebrate. Amidst scandals of corruption and more and more people learning the government and the drug cartels are one and the same, the ambient out there is really thick and ugly. It feels dangerous, like this thing might blow up soon into a civil war or a second revolution. Not sure what's going to happen (there's been, let's say, false alarms before), but it's really a terrible time to be Mexican, and the discontent is only growing.

Re: A Poem for the Students Who Disappeared in Mexico

Protests are taking place throughout the country (and also worldwide). I'm far enough to be safe, but also far enough to feel somewhat impotent.

Attached is a photo of what was happening tonight in Mexico City's central plaza. Thousands of people protesting and burning down an effigy of the president right in front of the national palace (roughly the equivalent of the White House). That may give you an idea of what the general mood is like down here.

Re: A Poem for the Students Who Disappeared in Mexico

This poem, David Huerta's poem, is the right poem.Words joined to combat barbarism and corruption. We are in those words. We are those students whose bodies are beyond corruption, but are near to the shadow of the owl, whose flight is our scream in the darkness. No podemos olvidar sus vidas, no podemos olvidar sus muertes.

"La mejor forma de decir es hacer"-Jose Marti.

Huerta is an extremely under appreciated poet.

I'm not a fan of Aljazeera America but you find truth where you find it.
