Which Ligotti work for a new reader?
Very interested in his work, stemming from a love of Edgar A. Poe, and Lovecraft. Suggestions........

I'd say the best place to start is The Nightmare Factory since that's basically a collection of his books and then move onto stuff like My Work Is Not Yet Done and the other hard to find stuff

As Irishawk is a longtime friend, I have presented him with a copy of The Nightmare Factory for his introduction to Ligotti. I am anxious to hear of his impressions.

I must also endorse the nightmare factory. I keep a copy next to my bed and refer to it constantly to ensure nice dreams. (I find nightmares more entertaining than ordinary dreams)

That's funny--I ALSO prefer nightmares to other dreams chiefly because they are more entertaining. As a child, of course, my nightmares were the most dreaded component of my young existence, but as an adult I can't really get enough of 'em.
I suppose this proclivity towards night terror could backfire on both of us eventually. In fact, this character premise (a narrator who consciously exacerbates his imagination with frightening thoughts and images to induce entertaining/fascinating nightmares) would make for quite a promising Ligotti story! | |||||||||||
"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”
