“And ne forhtedon na” is Old English for “... Be not afraid” and is a quote from the poem “The Battle of Maldon” which Borges translated and often discussed. It is tragically ironic in the sense that the words are delivered to a group of young warriers in Maldon facing certain destruction. The sculptural relief depicts a scene of warriors in armor that echoes the Lindisfarne gravestone, which probably depicts memories of a raid by Vikings in 793. | |||||||||||
