Re: Favorite Horror Movies

Does anyone remember a film called The Reflecting Skin? I saw it too many years ago to recount its plot and to the best of my knowlege it's not yet available on DVD, or if it was it is no more.

I've got bit of a fetish for horror in which the Christian Church plays the "monster" as opposed the more occult oriented horror which is much more common and equally less effective in my experience. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

"The Reflecting Skin" is one of my all-time favorite films. Absolutely exsquisite. I do not believe it was ever produced on DVD. I have an old VHS dub that I created about fifteen years ago or so.

Re: Favorite Horror Movies

My favorite horror movies of all time are Martin and Russel's The Devils.
Other good ones/favorites to check out:
Return Of The Living Dead (it's just fun!)
28 Days Later
Grapes Of Death
If you can't tell i'm a huge fan of zombie movies. I find that whole concept terrifying!

Re: Favorite Horror Movies

Ten that I recommend, listed in no particular order:

-The Shining (seen it at least six times and it never gets old)
-The Exorcist (probably the best English language horror film ever made, despite the somewhat happy ending)
-Dawn of the Dead (though it is not actually scary)
-Suspiria (perhaps the most cathartic viewing experience of my life)
-In the Company of Wolves (despite the cheesy sets & crude special effects, Angela Carter's subversive reimagining of the werewolf archetype shines through)
-Dark Water (easily the best of the recent J-horror remakes)
-A Nightmare on Elm Street (despite hackish cliches, this remains a scary film)
-The Descent (probably the best all around English language horror film of the past 10 years)
-Audition (though I consider it more of a conte cruel than a true horror film)
-El Noche del Terror Ciego (USA "Tombs of the Blind Dead") Best of the European trash cinema. Masterful use of silence and stillness.

Re: Favorite Horror Movies

Yes, The Descent is quite good. The film version of The Mist is also notable.

Fave horror film? This list is subject to change without notice...

Dawn of the Dead ('78), The Thing (Carpenter), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Hooper), Suspiria, Audition, Kairo, Last House on Dead End Street, Zombie Flesh Eaters, Cannibal Holocaust, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, Nosferatu (1922), The Brood, Videodrome, Scanners, Santa Sangre, Deranged, All Night Long 2: Atrocity, House on the Edge of the Park, Night Train Murders, Island of Death, Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural, Begotten, The Untold Story, Blood Feast, NekRomantik 2, Beyond the Darkness, The Beyond, Tenebrae, The Evil Dead, Tombs of the Blind Dead, Clean, Shaven, Hellraiser, City of the Living Dead, Inferno, Aftermath... this list could go on forever.

But even if it did, it would never contain the words "August Underground"...

Re: Favorite Horror Movies

a lot already mentioned that i like, but heres a couple more to throw into the hat:

ravenous (outstanding horror/spagetti western/comedy fusion with robert carlyle and guy pearce);

society (great allegory about how the rich feed on the poor);

in the mouth of madness (john carpenters best hp lovecraft homage);

dagon (one of the few hp lovecraft stories to actually work on film);

la cabinet (sp??) (fantastic silent spanish film about a bloke who gets stuck in a phone box);

xtro (brilliant, surreal british horror about an alien invasion – but DONT watch the stupid sequels).

reflecting skin and passion of darkly noon both very good (got em on vhs).

very much agree with the likes of session 9, uzumaki, shining, the thing, alien and numerous others.

Re: Favorite Horror Movies

A great one from Britain is Witchfinder General. Vincent Price (usually a tongue in cheek ham) is excellent and restrained. It has a great plot and the cinematography is excellent.
