Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
Was it? Because Lovecraft did not give the creature a name during the story. I'll take your word for it, guest.

Pretty sure it WAS a Shoggoth...recall, they were supposed to be so awful that old Abdul desperately claimed that none had e'er existed on Earth.
Ubbo-Sathla would have been WAAAAY worse, IMO... From the Isolate Tower, Aether

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
I always thought it was a shoggoth, since they were the only creatures mentioned besides the Elder Ones in the story.

Silent,
In an old CALL adventure, an Investigator of mine made the nigh-fatal error of dropping a grenade down an immense pit wherein Ubbo-Sathla resided. It seemed a good idea at the time...

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
I voted for Ghroth. I know that Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth are the most powerful, but neither of these is really formidable, as humanity is so insignificant to them that they aren't actively trying to destroy it.
Nyarlathotep seems to be more interested in playing games with humanity than anything else. Ghroth however is solely responsible for waking up and freeing all the Great Old Ones on earth, and therefore gets my vote.

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
True, ye from yond the Northern Winds. Ghroth could easily awaken or disturb Cthulhu, Byatis, Yig, Tsathoggua, Nyogtha, Cyaegha, Ghatanothoa, Zoth-Ommog, Ythogtha, Cthylla, Shterot, Zushakon, Dagon & Hydra, Ithaqua, Mappo no Ryujin, Atlach-Nacha, Zvilpogghua, Cthugha, Coatlicue, and Yeb, possibly rousing Ubbo-Sathla, Yidhra, Cthalpa, and Abhoth (they're technically Outer Gods; the effect is probably the same). Good-bye humanity. 'Course, one has to ask why they're here. Ubbo-Sathla and its connection to Azathoth? Major crossroads for something big? Stylish design for the fjords (See Douglas Adams)? Only they know...

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
Very true...consider, however, that all energy and matter, all that is born of CHAOS' ebb & flow, every being from the infinite to the infinitesimal, EVERYTHING exists according to the incomprehensible dictates and seemingly unknowable caprice of the Daemon Sultan. Ghroth included.

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
Therefore, wouldn't his twin cause similar? I've just had a thought: Yidhra, hinted at being the spawn of Ubbo-Sathla, is in essence the "female" counterpart to Nyarlathotep. The progenitors of both are the fissal spawn of Mlandoth (the originally nameless being CAS alluded to as splitting to form the duo) and both share the manifold form aspect. They also seem to fit their masters quite well: While Nyarlathotep is sophisticated beyond all civilisations (Azathoth is said to be unconscious but mentally all-transcending; basically, he wakes up, Nyarly cheers up, we burn up), Yidhra is far more ancient and animalistic in nature, befitting the spawn of the mindless, primal, all-spawning horror that is Ubbo-Sathla. Now, wouldn't it be interesting for a CoC scenario if the pair spawned something just as intelligent and reptilian as the both of them...
