Karin Tidbeck anyone?
Trying to read more recent authors now and finished her Jagannath collection recently, which you may remember received heaps of praise from several big fantasy authors when it came out. I didn't love it as much as they did but she is good, the scandinavian folklore and countryside is nicely evoked at times. Her own invented Swedish legend in "Pyret" is really well done and I think some of you would enjoy it.
There is a few similar stories but also others that are completely different, like an absurd bureaucratic dystopia and some that are really gross and surreal. Also the story of aristocrats seemingly beyond time playing violent croquet games and beating up their servants is quite interesting. She has a novel out that I'd like to read soon. Might have to check out her various stories in online magazines (I'm not used to doing that) and some more recent anthologies. | |||||||||||
