Not sure if this is off the radar, but it's a thing that lifts my heavy heart:

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
I had the privilege of seeing Sunn O))) live tonight in Chicago.
My whole body is ringing and I am covered from dust that their drone shook from the ceiling. Attila Csihar is a phenomenal singer. This show would have been better performed at the CSO or Civic Opera. This video is from a different show, but look at that costume! If you have a chance to catch this tour, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so.

OM's entire catalogue is amazing. Al Cisneros's bass lines will infect your dreams.

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
This band has recently reentered my playlist after one of the members released some old live recordings. US two-piece who recorded some nasty black metal / grindcore in the mid 90's. Only for those with a stomach for completely gutter-tier recording values...

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
I've just got back from Wacken Open Air Festival. Here are some quick notes on the bands I saw:
Thursday Saxon, Black Stage Comments: Journeymen. Foreigner, Black Stage (snatches of music and their hit) Comments: Didn't sound very 'live' to me. Sub Dub Micromachine, Wasteland Stage (part of set) Comments: Masked 'Mad Max' aesthetic, with nihilistic erotic dancers to one side. Iron Maiden, True Metal Stage Comments: I'm not really a fan, and we were quite far back, so I was not blown away, but have had 'Fear of the Dark' going round in my head since, and I was somewhat taken back to my teenage years. Blue Oyster Cult, W:E:T Stage Comments: Wanted to like this more than I did. Found it got going with the final song, 'Don't Fear the Reaper'. Friday Loudness, True Metal Stage (from partway through set) Comments: Lively, good. Girlschool, W:E:T Stage Comments: Couldn't get into it. The various elements could have worked well together, but didn't for me. Orphaned Land, Headbangers Stage Comments: Fantastic. Original, stirring, immediate - great crowd atmosphere. The surprise discovery of the festival. Blind Guardian, True Metal Stage Comments: Viewed from quite far back, hence possibly suffered the same problem as Iron Maiden. However, I enjoyed this more than IM. Saturday Borknagar, Black stage Comments: Another discovery. Interesting mix of heavy sequences with doom-laden or soaring melody and growling fast sections. Snowy Shaw, W:E:T: Stage (last few songs) Comments: A pretty good King Diamond rip-off, quite theatrical with a tight band. Dritte Wahl, Headbanger Stage (first song or so) Comments: Sounded catchy and a bit oi-ish. Thought it could be good, but we left quickly in order to regroup and come back for Gloryhammer) Gloryhammer, Headbanger Stage Comments: Good, rousing fun. One of the better gigs. Eat the Turnbuckle, Beer Garden Stage (last extended chord whine of final song and last dribbles of gore) Comments: !!! Steel Panther, True Metal Stage (fair portion of show to the end, in order to arrive early for Triptykon) Comments: Pretty good musicians. Triptykon, Black Stage Comments: Awesome. Musical highlight of the festival for me. Completely chthonic, like some thunderous ritual in a cyclopean temple. Arch Enemy, Black Stage (first fifty minutes or so of a one-hour-fifteen-minute set) Comments: Pretty good. Great light show. Dynamic singer. Music seems to have more surface than depth, somehow, but is attractive nonetheless. Samples: The full Triptykon: The full Arch Enemy:
