Topic Winner Nominating T.L. for Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award

Okay, okay...first of all, I fully understand the irony of nominating someone who is on the record as saying life is a curse for a...lifetime achievement award.

But, despite that irony, I went ahead and did it. I've nominated Tom for the HWA's Lifetime Achievement Award. (Apparently, this is his first year of eligibility, as Wikipedia says he just recently hit the minimum age for consideration).

He certainly deserves it. I can't think of anyone who's made a more impressive contribution to the field over the last thirty years. HIs work deserves greater recognition than it gets. Will the Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award committee see it the same way? Who knows. But ya gotta play to win, right?

(And yes, I also know that awards are...well...complicated in a way that leads many to disavow any interest in them. I get that, too. Sometimes I feel the same way. But in this case, I really feel it's important for Tom to be recognized in this fashion.)

Nicole, anything we can do on our end to help? He ABSOLUTELY deserves the recognition, even if he is lukewarm to it; I think he'd appreciate the irony though

Honestly, I've never fully immersed myself in HWA/Bram Stoker Award politics. (There may be people here on T.L.O. much better versed in this that I am).

My understanding is that the nominations are considered by a five-person committee. The chair of that committee is Kathy Ptacek. The other members are Jo Fletcher, John R. Little, Greg Herren, and Jeff Strand. In order to nominate an author for this award, you have to be an HWA member. I've already made the nomination, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt for other HWA members here on TLO to second the nomination. If anyone else here on TLO is an HWA member, feel free to drop me an email at nicolecushingwriter@gmail.com and I can direct you toward the proper venues to let your thoughts be known.

I'm not an HWA member, though might be before too long. I'll certainly do what I can as far as signal boosting when the time comes.

Re: Nominating T.L. for Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award

The Rules indicate the criteria as follows- “[the award] is given to an individual whose work has substantially influenced the dark the dark fantasy/horror/occult genre. While ordinarily this would go to an author whose body of work represents an extraordinary level of quality over an extended period of time, it may also recognize influential accomplishments in other creative fields” . From what I have heard it is the “influencing” component (within literature and elsewhere) which attracts substantial focus from the Committee members as invariably all nominees have produced quality works.

Good luck with this attempt.

I recall making a similar suggestion for TL Stoker recognition a few years ago.

Grand Master: World Horror Convention 2010 - THE NIGHTMARE NETWORK

It failed.

Of course, since the suggestion hailed from me, supreme indifference on the part of humanity was always inevitable.

Are authors allowed to nominate themselves for this award?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Usually, the authors honored with this award are people who are and have been significant in the genre for a number of years and have lots of admirers to do the nominating on their behalf. (I mean, it would be pretty slimy to nominate yourself for a lifetime achievement award...the kind of thing George Costanza might do.)

A list of past honorees is available here --> http://www.horror.org/laawd.htm
