Re: Erotic Literature
Justine, Philosophy in the Bedroom, and Other Writings by Marquis de Sade
Juliette by Marquis de Sade I read bits and pieces of 120 Days of Sodom, but it seemed a bit much. With the erotica you also get quite a bit of of blasphemy, philosophy, and humor. It tends to get repetitive after a while, bit I never regretted reading them. Enjoyed some of them a great deal.

Re: Erotic Literature
As far as reading de Sade is concerned, I would recommend starting with Philosophy in the Boudoir. Of his longer works, it's the shortest and by far the most well-structured. In its gleefully obscene usurpation of the Platonic dialogue form, it packs the biggest philosophical punch of all of his works. On top of that, it actually is quite erotic, at least until the end, where it gets a bit too gruesome for my personal sexual preference. It seems to me by far the best entry point into de Sade's oeuvre.

Re: Erotic Literature
Actually, none of the books mentioned so far strike me as really 'erotic.' I found the Ballard book and De Sade both boring,
A true erotic novel is "The Story of O." It makes every reader a collaborator in an erotic nightmare. It could only have been written by a woman--but what a joke that the woman was Anne Desclos, a mousy French intellectual! A Great Gothic novel with sex stepping in for the Supernatural. It was, however, demonic enough for the part. 'Pauline Reage' whipped de Sade's ass if you don't mind my sayin'.

Re: Erotic Literature
Forgive this off-topic foray but I just discovered some info today about Durrenmatt's Titus Andronicus and a few may be interested.
No one in their right mind will accuse "Titus Andronicus" of being an erotic work. But I always was intrigued by Durrenmatt's remark that "...it wasn't horrible enough and that's why it's regarded as an unfortunate bit of grotesquerie.." He kniw he could fix it and, once again, thumb his nose at High Culture and the Critics. He rewrote much of the play's dialogue, changed major scenes and added a new character, a Hessian. That's really raising the ante.

Re: Erotic Literature
Bataille's 'Story of the Eye' springs immediately to mind.
I would also recommend Brendan Connell's 'Metrophilias'.
