Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
For 1349 that particular album is off the wall. It definitely polarized some of their fanbase.
With black metal, for my money, I prefer the stuff coming out of France: Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, Reverence, CYT, Drastus, Wolok, Antaeus, Dwellers of the Twilight... Just too many to name. I think this year's big metal release for me will be Triptykon. thank you, Tom Gabriel Fischer for not calling it a day. HR Giger cover artwork and Vincent Castiglia interior work. Apologies for the ridiculous size... courtesy of century media...

Hellhammer after Celtic Frost, and still love that primitive chugging death sound. Apollyon Sun didn't do much for me, though.
Looking forward to this. I have been following Mr. Fischer/Warrior since "To Mega Therion" and while I haven't loved everything he has done, I am always intrigued. I found Any fans of these bands should without a doubt read Fischer's Lots of touring band minutia, but still a fun and informative read.

An older black metal band that didn't ever get much attention, one of my favorites before they lost Cadaveria.

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
I'm not sure how off the radar the band Atrox is, but I highly recommend them. The music is a pretty avant-garde form of progressive metal, and their old singer, Monika Edvardsen, has an amazing voice that can perform some pretty intense vocal acrobatics. She truly sounds insane at times. I don't care so much for their latest release, Binocular, with their new, male, vocalist, but I would recommend the albums Contentum and Orgasm with no qualms whatsoever. Also, the artwork for these two album covers is quite cool, featuring paintings by none other than Monika Edvardsen.

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
Greetings all,
I'm very new to the forum, but I've been a Ligotti Lurker for a couple of years now. Being a Death Metal musician myself, I feel qualified to chime in on this topic. Fans of Mr. Ligotti need to check out these bands that, to me at least, embody the same essence as his writings: BLUT AUS NORD (France) http://www.youtube.com/v/qKsYnHPX6Ns&hl=en_US&fs=1& DEATHSPELL OMEGA (France) http://www.youtube.com/v/dAGGFaogNVs..._US&fs=1&rel=0 PORTAL (Australia) http://www.youtube.com/v/emrBZZtGFgI..._US&fs=1&rel=0

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
Some of these bands are excellent recommendations...here are a few more. There are a bit more "goth" than metal though. Oneiroid Psychosis could be a soundtrack to much of Ligotti's work..but that is subjective.

Yes, Mors Syphilitica are amazing, although definitely not metal! I would recommend the band that they came from, Requiem in White, to anybody who likes them.

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
Was listening to the Coldworld album "Melancholie (squared)" again a few weeks back, walking in the snow, and it's definitely an off-the-radar classic, the stuff of cults. An incredibly atmospheric production, end-to-end, not quite like anything else. I wonder if we'll ever hear anything more from him?

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
Xasthur moves me to tears—tears of boredom. Try any of these instead: Wigrid, Forgotten Woods, Den Saakaldte, Ekpyrosis, Bethlehem...
Blackjazz, the new album by Shining, is a must-have. Although not per se a metal band, they should find plenty of fans among those into Gorguts, Dødheimsgard, the aforementioned Frederik Thordendal and suchlike. This gives a good idea of what the album sounds like: Edit: And the Giger artwork for the Triptykon album has been used already by Order from Chaos:

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations
I definitely have to second Coldworld. Melancholie (squared) was one of my top 5 albums from 2008...absolutely phenomenal I love Ekpyrosis, but "Mensch Aus Gold" isn't for everybody, but I love avant garde black metal, so it's right up my alley
