Re: True Detective 2 to be 'not as dark'.

The first episode of season 2 was a little disappointing. Pretty much all the characters seemed the same-- brooding with a deep mysterious darkness in their past -- to the point where they can't even enjoy a freakin' blowjob .

The most interesting part was Colin Ferrell's hardcore alcoholic bat-#### insane detective, especially when he was beating the hell out of a guy in front of the guy's son, then telling the son, "If you ever bully or hurt anybody again, I'll come back and butt f**k your father with your mom's headless corpse on this goddamn lawn." Pretty crazy.

I liked the stuff at the compound with the weird new age cult. Notice the sign behind Rachel McAdams while her creepy dad was giving that speech about the meaningless of the universe? It was asking for donations, which I thought was funny. I actually liked the conversation she had with her father-- totally reminded me of a conversation I once had with a friend about another friend and how principled they were about letting them "find their own way" even as they were clearly on the verge of making a horrible, terrible, irreversibly damaging mistake. I immediately found myself sympathizing with McAdams' character.

I agree with Mark. Epic, epic fail. My bar for season 2 was abysmally low, like caterpillar low. And it still didn't clear it.

The whole thing seemed gimmicky, like NP was going for one liners or shock value but without the deep resonance that season one had. He should've learned his lesson that you can't adequately reproduce what was never yours to begin with. Guess it's hard to write a show when you can't plagiarize.

It felt hollow and insincere to me. I'll give it a few episodes to pick up but everything I liked about the first season seems to be missing.

I have to say that I did not enjoy the first episode of season 2 anywhere near as much as I did the first episode of season 1.

Re: True Detective 2 to be 'not as dark'.

I'm a freakin' masochist. Started watching episode 2 and cringed at the beginning when (SPOILER . . . like it freakin matters) . . . Vince Vaughn tried to do a McConaughey by talking about his dad locking him in a basement and "I think it's paper maiche . . . I keep waiting to wake up."

Just seemed like a (im)perfect combination of awful writing and the wrong actor. No hate towards Vaughn but these types of roles are not his strong points. Freakin' Pizzolatto.
