Re: Slate.com on Social Justice and the English Literary Canon

In my case, I spent more time reading popular works (mostly, horror, detective fiction, and science fiction) and read from the canon only because of school requirements. It was only when I chose to go to graduate school and taught that I read more from the latter.

Re: Slate.com on Social Justice and the English Literary Canon

Re: the canon vs horror, I am sometimes confused about how weird fiction is being re-defined these days to include anything from Hodgson or Grabinski to canonic (non-horror) writers such as Kafka, Schulz, Borges, Tutuola, Cortazar, Buzzati, Gibson or Murakami.

I think I understand the motivations for expanding the field from horror to high literature. But at the same time I can't help feeling it also makes the horror genre less subversive, actually less weird!

To give an example, I have sometimes experienced talking to people who claimed they knew all about weird fiction but had actually just read Murakami and Kafka, and of course never heard of Aickman or Machen. Strange.

Re: Slate.com on Social Justice and the English Literary Canon

UPDATE: The petition has not reached the Yale faculty. It also appears that the original petition was an anonymous Google doc, so for all we know it may not even be a legitimate petition.

I guess we were duped.

Regardless the discussion here was quite stimulating and thankfully very civil.

I'm waiting for the alt right and SJWs to all destroy each other so debating politics on the internet will become tolerable again.

Even though one of the top comments linked the Yale press release, effectively discrediting the OP story (reported by FOX News), Reddit's response was a total ####show that basically boiled down to SJW conspiracy theories and rebuttals without real substance to those conspiracy theories, and only a few nuggets of productive debate in between.

Yale may cave on English poets course after students called it

Well, I woke up to a Britain further skewered by imperialist nationalist right-wing bile, so at least it has put in perspective that online overzealous political correctness is far from an Orwellian force quite yet.

Re: Slate.com on Social Justice and the English Literary Canon

Yeah, the EU are awful (look at what happened to Greece), but now things are about to get a lot worse with the continued rise of nationalism and aggressive isolationist capitalism. Meanwhile the alt right are too busy complaining about some YouTuber who articulates feminist ideas poorly.
