Re: My literary career

Johan, your full name certainly has quite a ring to it.

From what you say, I wasn't so very wrong in thinking that your surname might mean "man-mountain", or at least I correctly identified its two halves.

Petronella, Apollonia and Adolphina are also splendid names.

Re: My literary career

Apologies to those who know me here for having been so completely absent from TLO these past few months.

To earn some money I have started as a freelance editor (in Dutch). In April I went to the Chamber of Commerce here in Delft and registered my company JZH Text Services. Through my network some assignments have already come my way. So I can eat...

In the meantime my literary career is flowering. I am still slaving over my (really big) novel, but I can see the end beckoning. More exciting in the short term is my first book publication in the second half of 2010 - a story of mine is to be included in a collection, published by a major Amsterdam publishing house. This could mean publicity, and possibly my breakthrough. But don't count your chickens etc. Another important development is that I'll be contributing a (paid) book review to an online site devoted to literary criticism. I am now busy reading that first novel about which I am expected to say some pertinent things... Deadline - 28 May.

So things are looking very good.

All the best from

Johan

Re: My literary career

To Whom It May Concern...

I am going to split my big novel into two parts. My personal deadline for part 1, Nether Hemisphere, of 'Through the Eye of the Cyclone' is 22 December. Through a contact of mine two literary publishing firms are interested, and a third one may enter the arena, too. Last Friday I gave a public reading in Amsterdam of a philosophical-poetic piece, which went down very well. This week a story of mine will be published as part of a collection. All in all, the momentum is growing. But the coming month will be crucial - I have to finish two climactic chapters. They will demand all my energies.

Still, I do find time to read new things, like 'Beneath the Surface' by Simon Strantzas and, earlier, Laird Barron's 'The Imago Sequence', both excellent in their own unique way. Though I'm no weird writer myself, I do find pleasure and inspiration in this very special branch of literature.
