Re: Trump

Which brings to mind his threats to journalists and anyone who criticizes him in a way that really stings. He doesn't give a #### about freedom of speech.

Re: Trump

Bias, distortion and outright lies are hardly admirable. Remember that Vermont utility company that was 'hacked' by the Russians? All the hysteria. But the Washington Post was forced to retract the story a day later. It wasn't true. They didn't bother to really check it out; it fit their agenda so well, they just liked it too darn much.
The press is outrageously corrupt.

You're right, but I also think Trump is far worse for this than even the average career crook politician. I understand the public's disgust for the political establishment and the mainstream media, but I think in their desperation they have turned to even worse alternatives.

I dislike materialism both politically and spiritually. Trump represents everything awful about post-industrialisation values. I don't understand how conservatives, many of whom I admire, can possibly like him. He isn't even a conservative. He isn't interested in conserving anything apart from what his ego-driven sybaritic desires drive him to. Look at the man's Twitter feed. He has shockingly low impulse control. He has zero emotional nuance beyond indifference and being a raving lunatic. It's beyond parody.

Based on the weight of evidence and the balance of probabilities, I think I know the answer to that!
But I live in U.K. Very interesting to hear all these views from TLO friends. Thanks.

When some Liberals began to push the idea of using RICO laws to criminalize free speech and making it a crime to deny the bad science behind "cartoon climatology," I knew Trump had my vote.

Only his talk of tariffs on some imported goods, and Chinese goods in particular, strikes me as problematic. Saving a (relatively) small handful of low paying factory jobs by making millions of American consumers pay millions and millions of dollars for these 'rescued' jobs isn't the way to go. I doubt if it will happen. Tariffs have a nasty habit of turning on you and biting you on the ass.

It's not just about "jobs, jobs, jobs." It's about a lot more than that.

Re: Trump

Climate change denial is comparable to creationism and, unsurprisingly, they share many exponents.
Preventing people with dangerous, anti-scientific agendas from assuming positions where they can influence policies or push those agendas on uncritical students is most certainly not an attack of freedom of speech.

Re: Trump

For many people of the Left, Climate Change is a Religion. Funny, but there's always a replacement for Religion to give life Meaning isn't there? It's no different than someone who accepts a convenient God. Unquestioning, fearful and intolerant. before a...sacred cow??

It's the height of arrogance to imagine self-centered Man can destroy the world.

And I'm too cynical to see the Beauty in Global Warming. Still... A Threat to the entire world that must bring all human beings together to fight it, a necessity that makes all men brothers, united by a common enemy!! For after all it's One World and we must work together to fight the Alien Menace...
Will the Antinatalists save the world in time?

Or is this a bad 50's sci-fi film I'm thinking of?

Check out the scientists who have a different perspective on this. What are some people afraid of?

Re: Trump

The leader of America believing global warming is a fiction invented by the Chinese is quite dangerous. Even if one is a proponent of antinatalism, it is preferable for the species to be eradicated peacefully rather than suffering terribly in some toxic wasteland.

I'm an extremist agnostic and open to any ideas. The problem is that Trump hasn't even considered climate change. He dismisses it immediately without reading into it and replaces it with some conspiracy nonsense his gut tells him to go with. It's poor form, and another display of why he's a terrible choice for leadership.

Re: Trump

It would seem a bit surreal, but politics is sophism and illusion par excellence in whatever form it takes. I defer to H.L. Mencken again: "When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental--men whose thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost...All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre--the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum."

“Evolution cannot avoid bringing intelligent life ultimately to an awareness of one thing above all else and that one thing is futility.”
Cormac McCarthy, The Sunset Limited
