Re: The X- Files

I really enjoyed this comeback, flaws and all. For the first time, I preferred the monster of the week episodes rather than the mythology ones.

My main problem with the last episode is that I really hate all this goddamn cliffhangers.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: The X- Files

Unsurprisingly, it seems there will be more The X-Files episodes:

I liked every episode that wasn't written by Chris Carter, so I'd be up for more.

I thought the S11 mytharc opener was typically horrible. Those Chris Carter voice-overs make my skin crawl.

Looking forward to all the standalones by other writers.

Re: The X- Files

The X-Files should've ended way back at season 5, as was originally planned, with a movie to kind of put a bow on things. But money talks, as they say, and now here we are. As I'm sure it's already been said somewhere, Chris Carter is George Lucasing the hell out of The X-Files. The mythology episodes are a complete dumpster fire. The only episodes I care to see what they come up with are the monster-of-the-week non Chris Carter episodes. Even then I feel like David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are kinda mailing it in, just trying to make it thru this last season.

The second episode was okay-ish. Nothing special, but it wasn't painful to watch like last week's. Next week's is written by Carter again, but the week after is from the brilliant Darin Morgan. I loved his S10 episode.

Another brilliant and intelligent episode from Darin Morgan. The Chris Carter monster of the week before it was surprisingly alright.

Enjoyable enough season apart from the damn mytharc. Jettison it!

Re: The X- Files

I agree with you on both points, James. Last night's Darin Morgan episode was as brilliant as we've come to expect from him. A high point for me was the quick trip back through key series episodes with Reggie inserted into them, which was as hilarious as it was supposed to be. Then there's the metatextual commentary aspect of the episode as a whole, which I'm amazed Morgan can keep pulling off so well. His ability to use the vehicle of The X-Files to say something meaningful and moving about wider issues, while also producing an amusing, meaningful, and moving standalone story within the context of the series itself, is something special.

And yes, last week's Chris Carter standalone episode was (surprisingly) good throughout. Despite the real awfulness of this season's opening episode, the whole thing is turning out to be a fun ride. I'm still bracing for "My Struggle IV" at season's end, though, which I rather dread, especially if it proves to be the series' once-and-for-all finale, as sounds likely to be the case. I hope they don't put the whole thing to bed with an all-out dumpster fire.

It's a shame Darin Morgan never really hit it big beyond this sphere of Chris Carter produced cult television. He should get the chance to run his own show some day or at least contribute more to others.

Tempted to have a Millennium rewatch. The second season is the best out of all the Carterverse.
