Unusual choice but Return to Castle Wolfenstein would be one of my favorites. OK, it's thought of as a WWII game but it is ultimately built around an occult ritual. The reason it works around horror is because it starts as a military escape but soon the player is neck deep in ancient warriors resurrected from their graves. The story then goes military conventional until near the end when the same music and atmosphere returns.
I think the the horror isn't immediate and goes away only to return at the en that makes the horror work. | |||||||||||
